Free Music Notes for Van Morrison At The Movies: Soundtrack HitsFree Music Review: Better than a greatest hits album Hit: 5 Stars
Over the course of a career spanning forty years Van Morrison has released, by my count, thirty-seven albums. In one format or another I have about twenty of them. Thus, when I read that the man had released At The Movies I thought to myself "do I really need this?" After all, I count only three tracks on this cd that I don't have else ware. I suspect that my reaction was not uncommon. Well, having listened to the cd a couple of times, my answer is "no - I don't really need this - but I'm very happy to have it!"
I don't think that the song selection could be improved. All of the usual suspects are here, Gloria, Brown-Eyed Girl, Moondance, Domino, Jackie Wilson Said, Wild Night, Into the Mystic. However, there are also a few lesser known gems. Of the nineteen songs five are live or re-recorded. Particularly notable is the terrific Comfortably Numb with Roger Waters. Accordingly, although not usually a fan of "greatest hits" packages, I heartily recommend this release to both long-standing fans and those who are only slightly acquainted with the artist. You will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: The BEST best-of Hit: 5 Stars
It is serendipitous that the tracks movie producers chose from Van's massive catalog also happen to be touchstones in his long soulful career.
For my money, this is the best of the best-ofs, based on the inclusion of such wonderful songs as "wonderful remark," often neglected in other collections such as Best of Vol. 1.
As a musician, Van Morrison has been a Renaissance Man embracing blues, jazz, rock and his many esoteric muses, i.e. the "gypsy soul" he sings about in "Into the Mystic."
This CD is recommended for both the Van fan who has forgotten about these songs for years along with the neophyte who learns that Greil Marcus and Martin Scorsese and other legends worshipped at the alter of this Irish Rover and want to know what all the fuss is about. Van was the man, and for some this disc will be a homecoming. For others it will be a welcoming "into the mystic."
The inclusion of the Pink Floyd number with Van on chorus featured in "The Deaparted" is a nice bonus to a more-than-standout collection.
A+
Free Music Review: Isn't Marketing A Wonderful Thing? Hit: 5 Stars
Instead of releasing Van Morrison's Greatest Hits Vol. 243, pick some songs that have appeared on soundtracks, add live versions of big hits, a couple of pre-solo songs and a couple of classics that weren't hits and suddenly you have a package that can be marketed as "At The Movies" and put in stores just in time for the Oscars.
Nevertheless, just ignore the crassness of the marketing. This is, after all, another Van Morrison's Greatest Hits and, as such, is 19 slices of heaven. A legendary performer, we get several live takes of oldies that show they remain fresh. As does everything on the CD - some of which originally dates back 40 years. It is a tribute to his genius that these songs are as vital and relevant today.
The man, the myth, the mystic - Van Morrison. It's sad such wonderful music needs this kind of marketing gimmick but if it brings younger listeners not so familiar with Van to their iPods to try the music then it is worth it.
Free Music Review: Silver Screen Van Hit: 5 Stars
Van Morrison's songs have been the subject of numerous compilations, but this new set has to be given credit for its unique approach to selecting the songs. This nineteen-track set compiles songs that were featured in movies (although some are live versions that substitute for the studio tracks used in the film except in the case of "Comfortably Numb"). Mr. Morrison's music is perfectly suited for movies and directors have made liberal use of his music. All of his biggest hits like "Wild Night", "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance" (a previously unreleased live version) and "Gloria" are included. There are lesser-known gems as well including the brilliant "Real Real Gone" from Enlightenment, "Hungry For Your Love" from Wavelength and "Days Like These" from the album of the same name. Van Morrison At The Movies is a first rate collection of songs and for anyone looking for a varied introduction to his music, this is a great place to start.
Free Music Review: I love the music of Van Morrison Hit: 5 Stars
I don't remember all the movies these Van Morrison songs were featured in, but I love Van's music I didn't even see the movie Clean and Sober, but I recognized the great song Domino instantly. My favorite track on this CD is Brown Eyed Girl. It was featured in the film Born On the Fourth Of July. I also enjoyed the fun track Wild Night. This song was featured in the female buddy film Thelma and Louise. I love the track Moondance. It sounds so groovy. I did not know it was featured in the movie An American Werewolf In London though. I feel like renting the movie just to see how the song was used. The classic hit Gloria is another favorite of mine. This song was featured in the movie The Outsiders. Van sings this song with a lot of spirit and energy. Have I Told You Lately is a very pretty song. It was featured in the recent flick One Fine Day. I enjoyed the music on this CD very much.
