Free Music Notes for Van Morrison At The Movies: Soundtrack HitsFree Music Review: Nice compilation with some rarities Hit: 4 Stars
On one hand its just another Van compilation including many of the same songs previously released on "best of" releases. But, it also includes some different performances of familar songs including a number of live performances that are outstanding. Sound quality is improved over the original CD releases of the previous 2 "best of" CD's. I love the live Domino, Moondance and of course, Caravan live from The Last Waltz. The re-recorded version of Brown Eyed Girl is nice and surprisingly doesn't deviate as much from the original as you would expect. Even as a movie soundtrack of Van Morrison its not complete. I noticed one missing great song; I Will Be Your Lover, Too from the Street Choir CD.
All in all its a very enjoyable and thankfully different compilation for those of us who already own the best of Van. As for new people looking to get a brief, initial overview of Van's music, I think it works well as a single CD compilation. It will most likely make you want to explore other areas of his vast catalog. And that is a good thing!
Free Music Review: Not As Good As One Would Think Hit: 4 Stars
Van Morrison has been great (not just good) for 40 years. In a way, this CD is a Greatest Hits collection with live versions of a few songs replacing the original versions. In fact, each individual song is really first rate. However, the album as a whole seems a bit disjointed. Sometimes while listening, I would think about the original version of a song, and sometimes I would think about the songs surrounding the song on the original album. In other words, this CD is a collection of very fine individual songs, but (as with all first rate greatest hits albums) it will send you back to hear the songs in the context that they were first created.
Free Music Review: each song is a winner Hit: 4 Stars
I have never been a big Van Morrison fan. Well, that's not exactly true it seems. After listening to this collection of Morrison's movie contributions I realized I know more of his songs than I thought. I can't say I listen to them over and over again, but when songs like "Gloria," "Baby, Please Don't Go," "Moondance," "Wild Night," "Brown Eyed Girl," "Days Like This," and "Have I told You Lately" come on the radio, I'm not exactly changing the station. I may actually remember a few of these from the movies that they're taken from. This may as well have been a greatest hits collection, because each song is a winner.
Free Music Review: i guess this cd is for fans of van Hit: 4 Stars
and it works. all the songs are good until the last one, which is excruciating. i liked hearing my favorite part of my favorite movie ("van the man, ladies and gentlemen!") the best.
no surprises, tho, except for that one song at the end...
i think i bought this because it was cheap, and it ended up being good value for money, good to play in the car, just not a real exciting cd the way the skiffle sessions or duets ones were. you can't blame van for not being able to come up with anything new after half a century--because he does, sometimes--just not here.
Free Music Review: Nice selection of songs. Hit: 4 Stars
There were 2 huge omissions that have been in movies, "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" and "Sweet Thing".
The 2 "Best of VM" came out around 1993, and as good as they were, there's a lot of stuff the Van fans thought were missing. I think with the "Brown Eyed Girl" era being repackaged as much as it is and Van being an 'album artist', he doesn't do compilations all that often. "Philosopher's Stone" was the most recent, but those were rarities.
This is a great intro to Van's music, but nothing tops "Astral Weeks" from beginning to end.
