Free Music Notes for Be Not NobodyFree Music Review: Not Another Teen Album Hit: 4 StarsIt's sometimes said that there aren't enough women in music, and that they have to work harder, or that critical reception is quietly different, in some manner or another. Vanessa Carlton triumphantly chucks all of this out the window from the first song. What I first heard when playing this album was a courageous, honest and above all SINGULAR voice, wise to human failing, but even rarer, with a still-young sense of promise, innocence and wonder irradiating it all. My favourite track is the one that emotionally anaemic critics detest, 'Pretty Baby'. This, together with Ordinary Day and A Thousand Miles are the quaystones of this powerful album. Some of the later tracks, I'll concede, can be a bit repetitive (dark, a little insular, a lot of orchestra) but it still leaves one reassured, and indeed, optimistic about music today. I love this album - you will too. Especially Pretty Baby.
Free Music Review: Better Than I expected Hit: 5 StarsThis is a good album of well crafted and versatile pop-songs. I really like Vanessa's emotional voice. She has her own unique style of music with pop, rock, and classical influences. I also really like the fact that she writes her own songs and is a classically trained pianist. She seems very talented. I especially dug the track "Paint It Black," because of the sitar in the background and it's eastern flair. She has her own distinct sound with the orchestra in the background as well.
Free Music Review: Pianos, Punctuation Hit: 5 StarsA nice debut here. 'A Thousand Miles' and 'Ordinary Day' are the singles of course, and deservedly so. Poignant, melodic and lyrically rich they provide perfect introductions to this obviously gifted pianist and songwriter. Some of the other tracks here approach the formulaic, but hey- -it's a great formula. The orchestration throughout is flawless, perfectly punctuating Carlton's fluid piano playing and her beautifully plaintive voice. Next time she chooses a song to cover, though, she should probably try something less challenging. . .one of Brian Ferry's ballads or some early Bee Gees would be a piece of cake for her. Or 'Sitting On A Fence' if she has to cover the Stones again, or 'The Singer Not The Song'. Whoa, that would be awesome. Hey, Vanessa. . .
Free Music Review: Very Enjoyable CD Hit: 4 StarsI enjoyed the Vanessa Carlton CD. Of course her hit A Thousand Miles is great. But there were many other songs on the CD that were great including Rinse and Paradise. I was realy amazed at how great her cover of Paint It Black sounded - she really made the song her own. This is a very good debut CD.
Free Music Review: Unique; shows potential. (3.5 stars) Hit: 3 StarsVanessa Carlton seems to have talent--which is rare in the mainstream music scene these days. After releasing the single "A Thousand Miles" (a great song), she's become a household name. She has wonderful musical ability; she has a sweet yet strong singing voice and can play the piano.
However, although I really like "Ordinary Day", "Paradise", the aforementioned "A Thousand Miles", and her remake of "Paint It Black", most of her songs sound the same. It's very hard to tell which song is which for the first few seconds of one of her songs. I see a lot of potential here, and I think that she can use that potential to create more songs that sound different from each other.
