Free Music Review: Awesome From the Begin til' the End
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this album, not think 'bout i'm a fan, is so simple is excellent, but it's so hard to understan harmonium.

white houses 4/5: i like this song, the lyric is easy, but well estructured, the music looks a little bit simple, but it's good.

who's to say 5/5: i love it, the rebel but honest song, 'bout what you're feeling: mother don't.../ tell me friends are the ones that i lose/ coz' they bleed before you, it's nice

annie 5/5: this song turn me sad when i hear it, a dying girl, the piano is excellent and the vocals too, is a song with so much feel, but it rare that vanessa didn't use the orchestra in this song

san francisco 4/5: it's like a sunday song, i like it, the orchestra sound good, the piano look simple but it's nice

afterglow 5/5: i like the lyric, about feel free, and the music is excellent too, one of my fav. with annie

private radio 4/5: this gets a rhythm more comercial, but the lyrics like all the lyrics of this album is so good, about the insomnia, part of one that the other unknow maybe won't know

half a week before the winter 5/5: i like the lyrics here star the somber part of harmonium, confuses lyrics, talkin' about supervivence.

c'est la vie 5/5: i love the fender rhodes, the somber sound, the drums, oh it's all so melancholyc

papa 5/5: she assume a great role like pianist, playin' just her all the song, is a short song but she shows her ability in the piano, and the lyrics is so somber too

she floats 5/5: the most somber and melancholyc song in the album, a girl screams in this song, the lyrcis is short but a perfect craft, i love it too

the wreckage 5/5: the secret track, i love it, is so good, the same of papa

Free Music Review: Even Better Than Her First Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first album I bought by Vanessa Carlton. As I said in my review in Be Not Nobody, her first album, I did not buy BNN because I thought A Thousand Miles would be her only hit and so I didn't buy it. But then I heard White Houses, her first song off Harmonium, and I could not get this song out of my head and soon bought it. I was not disappointed. Vanessa's second c.d. is greatly profound, beautiful, mesmerizing, and emotional. I loved it from beginning to end; and even now after having this c.d. for months I still find it hard to skip any song. This c.d. is kind of interesting as well because Vanessa appears to have gone a bit more darker than her first c.d. but Vanessa sounds so very honest; she means what she says and that's another reason why I love this c.d.- and why mainstream hates it. Mainstream hates any songs that go to the very depth of the heart and pulls out all these feelings we do not speak out about in public, and that's why I believe Vanessa's c.d. is not selling so well. Well I find this c.d. a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of mainstream and it's mainstream's loss they do not hear music like this. Vanessa has grown more mature and it is proven throughout this c.d. After this c.d. I was greatly compelled to buy Be Not Nobody and I was not disappointed with the first either but indeed strongly believe Harmonium is even better! After this c.d. Vanessa Carlton grew to be one of my favorite singers and she has been a great inspiration I'm sure to many. Vanessa could have sold out to the mainstream but she refused to and that is what is great about her and I hope she never changes that independent attitude. We need more honest singers like this woman.

White Houses- A+- Amazing. After the first time I heard this it would not leave my head.

Who's To Say- A+- Very beautiful song; if making another single, it should be this one.

Annie- B+- Don't get me wrong, lovely lyrics and very moving, but based on sound it was just an all right kind of song.

San Francisco- A+- This song is very catchy- I love the piano on it and it truly does make you feel Vanessa is leading you through the city.

Afterglow- A+- One of my most favorite songs by Vanessa, very beautiful.

Private Radio- B- Although this is a fun song to hear, I don't really connect to what she's saying. I believe she's singing about insomnia.

Half A Week Before the Winter- A- I don't get what it is about this song but the dark lyrics are very interesting to hear and it's fun to think what the heck she is talking about in this song. The piano I like a lot in this song as well.

C'est La Vie- A- This song is raw and just plain awesome.

Papa- A- I love the sound in this song and the way Vanessa sings in it is very catchy.

She Floats- B- Very dark kind of song. I like the piano in it and the lyrics again are very interesting to hear but it was just an all right song to me sound- wise too.

Hidden Track: The Wreckage- A- I don't know why she hid this song I love the song. The lyrics anyone can relate to in one time of their life.

Free Music Review: 3-1/2 stars -- She's got a unique talent
Hit: 3 Stars

Before I begin, I'd like to clear up something: Vanessa Carlton is NOT a new artist. This is her second album, and her first album, Be Not Nobody (what does that mean, anyway?), had two hit singles ("A Thousand Miles" and "Ordinary Day"). Thus, her rendition of the Rolling Stones' "Time Is On My Side" isn't her first song (by the way, that song isn't on the album).

Now that that's settled, I have to say that in my opinion, Vanessa Carlton is like Cyndi Lauper: she makes great songs yet she doesn't have a great voice. And for some reason she took a while to release this album following the lead single "White Houses". She actually took a while to even come back with this album at all (maybe the Michelle Branch comparisons got to her after all?).

Anyway, Harmonium is another one of those albums that's influenced by the person the artist is dating (in this case, Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins). But results are still impressive for the most part. Stephan's production works well alongside Vanessa's vocals and piano work, which results in standouts like "Afterglow" and "Who's to Say", as well as the bonus track "The Wreckage" and the aforementioned "White Houses".

Sometimes Vanessa's vocals CAN get annoying, though, especially in "C'est La Vie" (but the lyrics in that song aren't that great either). "Papa" is also skippable, and "San Francisco" is pretty okay, but those songs don't make the album into a waste or anything. Vanessa's first album WAS better, but if you can get into her vocals, you won't be mad that you picked Harmonium up.

Vanessa is getting better and better each release!

This album has some beautiful lyrics. And ofcourse, all the lyrics are clean. White Houses, Who's To Say, Annie, San Fransisco, Afterglow,Private Radio, She Floats and The Wreckage are superb.

When I need a refreshing break from a busy day, I listen to Sarah McLachlan and Vanessa Carlton. Thank God for both of them!

The first song in this album that I heard was "White Houses." After listening to it for a few times, I couldn't get if off my head and decided to get the entire album.

Most of her songs are pretty slow compared to what I'm used to listen to, but Harmonium is definitely more enjoyable than Be Not Nobody. I never really liked the first album and hardly ever listened to it, but I can't stop listening to this album. I may not be an expert in the music industry, but I admire Carlton because her lyrics are less cliche and more personal. "White Houses," for example, tells an actual story, and no other songs can sound too similar like that. This is true for the rest of her songs. In addition, the piano is also great. Although there are drums and perhaps other instruments occasionally, what I enjoy the most really is the piano.
