Free Music Notes for Heroes & ThievesFree Music Review: A jazzy/New Age feel Hit: 3 Stars I picked up Vanessa Carlton's album because Stevie Nicks is on it. Stevie is also mentioned in the album's first single, "Nolita Fairytale". Having been a Stevie fan for 20+ years and owning everything Stevie has ever released, this album was one to add to the collection. I bought it for the Stevie song, "The One", but that's not the best track on the album. Vanessa toured with Stevie this summer and at the shows Vanessa announced that Stevie liked the song "The One" and wanted to sing on it, well now she has. Back in the 70's Stevie was asked to sing on a lot of albums, today her voice has lowered and she's not able to harmonize quite as well. The track is nothing to write home about. Stevie would have sounded better on "Spring Street" or the title track, "Heroes & Theives" (two of the better songs on the album). Overall, I'm not a big fan of Vanessa's voice, she sounds like she's about 14 or so. The album isn't bad, but nothing on it jumps out at you. Her voice is very thin and maybe in time she will develop a more adult sounding tone. In the meantime though "Heroes & Thieves" is an ok listen.
Free Music Review: Excellent! Hit: 5 StarsI loved Vanessa Carlton even before she hit it big with "A Thousand Miles." While I loved her first 2 CDs, this one is so much better. I never want to skip any of the songs. My favorites are "My Best," "Heroes and Theives," and "Fools Like Me." Her sound has matured and I think her voice has gotten better as well. I don't understand why she is overlooked by the music industry. She has more talent than a lot of artists currently topping charts. Even the fact that she writes her own music is worth commending her for. I hope she goes far with this album. She deserves to be known for more than "A Thousand Miles."
Free Music Review: Best Album Yet Hit: 4 StarsFor the most part I really like this album. I find it way better than her first album and her second too. Almost all of the songs are pretty upbeat which I normally don't like but I think it really works with this album. She really sings her heart out on a lot of the songs like Come Undone, My Best, and Fools Like Me which I don't think she's really done before. I think her lyrics have also really improved since her debut album. However, after a while the songs start to sound quite a bit alike and her piano playing wasn't really very special so for those reasons I had to knock off a star. But it's definitely a good album and I would definitely recommend everyone to get it.
Free Music Review: Heroric Vanessa Hit: 5 StarsVanessa Carlton returns with her third studio album, stirring up the music world with her pop ballads. Heroes And Thieves is in large comparison with its predecessor, and basically is an extension of tracks to Harmonium. Carlton's composition and performance are very much the same between the two albums revealing that she has more then likely discovered her signature sound. That's a great accomplishment, especially for a pianist her age. Pieces from this album are artisticlly driven by melodic vocals, and harmonic backing by guitars, bass, back up vocals, and crafted string sections. Percussion was carefully selected to blend majesticlly into a song, and create an end product which will leave fans in awe. Progressions are simple, but are so perfectly perfromed they are purely pleasing to one's ear. Dynamics are in full, bringing forth the clarity and distinctiveness to musical lines and chords. Joining Carlton on the track "The One" is none other than Stevie Nicks, and the two make an interesting pair of performers. It leaves a listener to hope for more collaboration with other artists on future albums and show tours. Once again, Vanessa worked with Third Eye Blind's Stephin Jenkins making it clear that the duo end up creating amazing music. After a hearing of Heroes And Thieves; fans will be left with their fingers crossed, hoping Vanessa Carlton lands another record deal to create even more albums.
Stand out tracks:
"Hands On Me"
"Come Undone"
"Heores And Thieves"
"Feels Like Me"
"Home"
Free Music Review: Love it but wanting more... Hit: 4 StarsWhere to start....new Vanessa album came out yesterday, I snuck away from work to grab it at Target. I listened to it before it came out last week on VH1 and liked it then, and I am glad I purchased it.
The songs seem a bit more cheerful than the previous albums, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I personally liked the darker songs she wrote, Papa and The Wreckage were some of my favorites on the last album, and I'm in love with "All I Ask" but at the same time I appreciate the fact that her vocal talents seem to have grown and with each album she releases she seems to whine a little less (ie. Wanted on BNNB).
I wasn't as impressed with the piano part of this album, the piano on this one is much more a background filler than the focus of the songs. I was also somewhat disappointed and confused as to why "vanessa didn't contribute her writing chops to the album". Why wouldn't she write it? I know she "executive produced" it but still, it always disappoints me when artists don't write their own stuff, esp. one who started out writing. She's always had such great lyrics in her previous albums. I also would like to see a few more songs on one of her CDs.
That said, it is an enjoyable record, I'm glad I bought it. I am not a big fan of Steve Nick's's singing voice but many who are should enjoy "The One". I personally like "My Best" "Heroes and Thieves" "Fools Like Me" a lot. I don't think your money would be wasted on this CD at all.
