Free Music Notes for Heroes & ThievesFree Music Review: could've been perfect... but still great Hit: 5 Stars"this is the best batch of songs I've ever written"-Vanessa Carlton
no truer word, however the "best batch" doesn't make the "best album" because unfortunately the songs have to get "selected" (which is something I still don't get, if you write something why won't you release it at least in some forms?), and as usual Carlton's album is only 11 tracks which, as usual, left out some of the best songs she has ever written, such as Best Behavior (the quirky pretty song) and All Is Well(the dark, melancholy huntingly beautiful song), the album just doesn't feel whole to me without these two.
that said, I've always enjoyed Carlton's more dark, melancholy songs, for me her voice is just so expressive of them, such as Paradise, All I Ask (another fantastic song that was never released), and Half A Week Before Winter etc. But this album chose all the radio-friendly songs that, even though the tunes are clearly very sophisticated, made it sound younger than her other albums, especially the last song More Than This that constantly reminds me of children's song such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Also, some of the best songs are over mixed for the album, especially Put Your Hands On Me that give one a feeling of 80s music, usually the chorus of Carlton's songs are her voice, but Put Your Hands On Me's last chorus is obviously a choir's, which is what made it sound like old music in which there is a choir needed for back-up vocal, I think it would've sounded better if the choir is just Carlton's voice.
That said, lot's of good and improvements are still very appearant in this album. The lyrics are very connective and well-related to people of her generation, she focused mainly on just love songs instead of overrated "hater songs" we get so many these days. Her favorite song Home is definitely my favorite too, and she truly grew in terms of vocal, and you can hear in her songs she constantly chanllenges herself with high notes. I would have to say the best vocal is probably Spring Street, in which you can truly hear the maturity in her voice and how much she has grown. Unlike most people, I'm ambivalent about Stevie Nick's tribute to The One, I get they are trying to make contrast but whether the contrast actually worked or not I still need a few more listen to at least get use to it, but then again maybe it's because I don't really like Nick's voice, I have no doubt she's a great artist but her voice is slightly too mature for me.
But undoubtly this album is arguably her best, will satisfy many fans (especially the ones who enjoy the "lighter" aspect of her), and it's still overall very great and deserve at least 4 starts. For being her fan, I'll give it five and suck up all my complains :) though I do wish she will eventually release all the songs she wrote.
Free Music Review: This Is Good! Pick it Up! Hit: 4 StarsI'll Start By Stating That The Artwork And Title For The Record Are Tasteful Which Gives The Product 4 Stars Instead Of The Actual3(Sarcasm, If You Will)I Do Not Fancy There Being A Rather Tiny Selection To Choose From,Here. I Certainly Feel "VC" Has Been Absent Long Enough To provide Us With More That That Which Is Given. However, I Do Appreciate The Songs And How They Remind Me Of Catholic Church Hymns In Ways.
Though Such A Small Selection For A Third Release, I Must Say The Songs Are Still Great. My Favorites Include "Spring Street" "My Best" "Home" "Come Undone" "Heroes & Thieves" "This Time" And "Fools Like Me" In-Short "The Whole CD"
Free Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 StarsWell, this CD definitely was worth the wait! Vanessa's voice is so much more clearer on this album than on "Harmonium" and "Be Not Nobody". The songs are just amazing, and the aide of Stevie Nicks makes things even better. This album is a definite buy for any die-hard "nessaholic", as well as those who remember Vanessa from 2002's "A Thousand Miles". It doesn't disappoint!
Let me add, as I listen to this CD for the millionth time in the few short days that it's been out, that the piano on "Home" is absolutely amazing! I applaud you, Vanessa, for being such a talent in an industry that seems filled with fluff as of late!
Free Music Review: S U P E R B, and at least on par with Harmonium...! Hit: 5 StarsAnd that's saying A L O T cause Harmonium was my favorite album by her ever for the longest. It's very dark, complex and dreary but man was I feeling it back in 2004 and 2005. I swear, San Francisco, Who's To Say?, She Floats and Private Radio got the most spins by far!
I love this girl.
I would love to meet this girl.
I bet she'd be stubborn, opinionated and so, so enchanting.
You can tell she's very intelligent.
And sometimes, the intelligent folk tend to over-analyze and get sad.
Story of my life.
Anyway, the standouts stick out like a sore thumb:
Hands On Me (5/5), Fools Like Me (5.25/5), Home (5/5) This Time (5/5) and More Than This (5.25/5).
I was kinda critical of this album before I bought it cause I had downloaded the whole thing and was disappointed with it all but the piano and her soaring vocals which improved and A R E less whiny, which I thought was impossible!
My Best, This Time, Fools Like Me and Spring Street were very average for me at first and that's why the rating was something like 3.65/5 before but now it's like a 4.8/5 at least! I just don't wanna calculate this time.
Yes, this is my second go at the review and I just had to get my point across that this is one of the best albums of 2007 by FAR.
Similar to Kelly Clarkson's My December it has nothing but truthful tunes, albeit a LOT less angry and guitar-driven. If I recall, Fools Like Me is the only track that actually has guitar in it. I could be wrong.
Basically, after BUYING the actual album and putting it on iTunes I seriously GREW TO LOVE THIS PIECE OF WORK.
NOW, I see why it's the only album of hers with a 4.5 rating, instead of the usual 4/5.
Our Nessa glows here, and I'm so proud to finally realize this.
I'm gonna say this once; this album is SLIGHTLY better than Harmonium. There are NO bad songs, and no songs that rate less than a 4/5 so it beats it by a bit. But if I'm feeling down, then Harmonium and My December it is! :)
Final Rating: 4.8 stars.
