I'm not a fan of mainstream pop music. Very rarely is there an artist with mainstream appeal that completely knocks me off my feet. So when my friend introduced me to "Zipless", i was more than a bit skeptical. But all it took was one listen and i was hooked for good. The powerful lyrics are actually poems written by latter-day feminist Erica Jong (who cameos on the CD), and when brought to life by the rich, seductive voice of Vanessa Daou, i was immediately transported to another place, a place infused with mystery and sex, like visions of red wine and cigarettes on a Parisian balcony while watching a warm summer rainstorm approach with great speed. I heard about her on of all things, the Playboy channel's Hot Rocks. They showed the video for her song Black Forest. This is one of the best CDs ever. My wife is tired of listening to it, but I haven't given up.Free Music Review: Vanessa Daou deserves nore visibility!!

I first heard Vanessa on her MTV video for "Black Forest." I was intrigued by the song but it wasn't until a friend played her "Zipless" cd for me that I fell in love with her stylish, soft, sensual vocals... I bought Zipless immediately and if asked which cds I'd take w/ me to a deserted island, this would definitely make the list. It's erotic, passionate, poetic, haunting, make love to me all night type of music... I only wish she would make another solo album. Her unique, seductive sound combined with her unabashedly introspective lyrics make repeated listening a pleasure. Wonderful use of spoken word combined with haunting melodies and sleepy, hypnotic rhythms. If you enjoy such artists as Portishead and Julianna Raye, you might enjoy Vanessa's style as well. So sweet it hurts.
