Free Music Notes for Vanity 6

Free Music Review: Vanity encounter
Hit: 4 Stars

I have been a Prince fan since the early 1980's, ergo, I am also a fan of Vanity. I actually met Vanity in Washington DC back in 1987...she performed at a club called "Tracks," which, unfortunately, no longer exists. Vanity invited all the women on stage and we danced with her to "Nasty Girls"...it was fantastic! My friends and I followed her limo to a McDonald's, where her driver got her some food...as her driver was doing this, we approached the limo and talked with Vanity...she was very nice and took a photo with us. I will always enjoy and appreciate her music, as well as the kindness she showed to her adoring fans.

Free Music Review: Interesting but not worth $75 and up.....
Hit: 3 Stars

I bought this album on CD in a Wherehouse records about 15 years ago. Pretty much because I was a fan of Prince, particularly of the early to mid 80's period. I had no idea at that time that this would become so collectable one day (I've seen this sold for $75 and up and a website once offered me $50 for my copy). Aside from the "collectible" part of it, this CD is pretty average as far as the music on it. Don't get me wrong--- if you like 1999 era Prince, you'll love this. It ties in very well with 1999 and "What Time Is It" by The Time. BUT this is in no way as classic as anything on 1999. "He's So Dull" is a damn good pop song. "Nasty Girl" is top notch as well. I personally have always liked the melody of "Wet Dream"...but for the most part, this is pretty much comprised of second rate songs that Prince would have never used on one of his own albums. Highlight: Prince portraying a woman arguing with Vanity over a boyfriend on "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)". The song itself isn't all that great, but it's pretty amusing. I heard a bootleg of an unreleased Vanity 6 song called "Vibrater" once upon a time with Prince as a sales clerk which was also very funny. Overall this album isn't a classic, but it is a lot of fun. You generally get the feeling Prince was enjoying himself while making this. NOTE: This album, despite it's faults, is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the Apollonia 6 album, where Prince apparently lost all interest in the album half-way through recording it, took away their best songs and left them with nothing but "Sex Shooter" and a lot of filler that wouldn't have even made it on to this album. It's a drag that this isn't in print....but at the same time I kind of hope the value keeps going up because one day I might be able to put my kids through college by selling it if the value keeps going up. If this helps anyone, I know there was a Canadian reissue in print a while ago (IF it still is, I have no idea). Do some searching, you might be able to track it down.

Free Music Review: The Eighties Version of Lil Kim and Trina
Hit: 3 Stars

The lyrics on this Cd seem tame today, but back in 1982-83, this was considered the equivalent of what Little Kim and Trina are doing today as far as slackness is concerned.

Vanity and the gals couldn't carry a note in a bucket. Sex appeal is the thing here. The Time are backing them up musically and that's the CD's only real redeeming value. "He's So Dull" kinda rocks, and so does "If A Girl Answers" as well as "Nasty Girl." "Make Up, "Drive Me Wild," and "3X2+=6 are not so hot.

Interestingly, Vanity herself is now a minister (!?), the Rev. Denise Matthews. Recently she publicly "apologized for misleading our children." Along with having stopped singing, that's a commendable gesture.

Free Music Review: Brenda made the trio, not Vanity or Susan
Hit: 3 Stars

Beg to differ? Whatever. Brenda was the girl. "Bite The Beat","If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)" is proof enuff this white diva don't play (and the male voice is TERRY LEWIS not PRINCE). While Susan is singing in lala land "Drive Me Wild","Make-Up" and Vanity tries to hold the sex down with "Nasty Girl","Wet Dream","He's So Dull" and "3x2=6". It's not working. Brenda had the sensual soulful voice. Group should have been called BRENDA 6. THE TIME did they thing on the music though. PRINCE should have Brenda sing more of the lead here like on that APOLLONIA 6 album (remember that?).

Free Music Review: I'm Going To Keep It Real
Hit: 1 Stars

Actually, I'm going to keep it really real. I know most of you reviewers who gave this album 4-5 stars reviews are too blinded by 1980's nostalgia to see and hear that this music is utter crap. Vanity 6 was hot back in the day, but it was due to their s1utty image and not their music. Why do you think the only song you hear by them on the radio is "Nasty Girls"? That's the only song people remember them for. Let me tell you a secret: This CD isn't worth $29.52. In fact it shouldn't be worth anything because the music is boring- nothing 'hilarious' or 'interesting' about it. Plenty of of melodies being sung in warbly vocals over Casio go-go beats w/ no bass. I was able to download all of the tracks and after I listened to them, I thanked my lucky stars that I didn't spend one dime on it. Vanity was beautiful, but she couldn't sing or dance. Susan tried to portray herself as cute and innocent, but she couldn't really pull it off with that moustache. Brenda was just whatever. I feel sorry for anyone who buys "Vanity 6"!
