Free Music Notes for Almost Famous

Free Music Review: Crowe's Classics
Hit: 5 Stars

Almost Famous is a movie about the 70's, specifically the rock scene at the time. Cameron Crowe came of age as a teenage reporter for Rolling Magazine at that time. The music reflects his tastes and the soundtrack perfectly captures the spirit and essence of the film. He employs many of the war horses of the era like The Allman Brothers Band, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Who, but he uses some of their lesser known songs. Mr. Crowe's influence can be seen by the fact he is the first filmmaker to get Led Zeppelin to license their music for film. Numerous Zep songs appear in the film and the overlooked "That's The Way" shows up on the album. The Beach Boys' "Feel Flows" is a great piece of music from their superb Surf's Up album and the great Todd Rundgren contributes "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" from his brilliant double album Something/Anything? One of the most memorable scenes from the film is on the fictional band Stillwater's bus, when the band sings along to Elton John's "Tiny Dancer". It is one of Mr. John's most beautiful songs and it perfectly captured the moment. Stillwater shows up with their big "hit" "Fever Dog", which is a decent piece of 70's guitar rock. All in all, the soundtrack to Almost Famous conveys the feel of the film to the listener and is made up of great music.

Free Music Review: Four things to always expect from a Cameron Crowe soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

1. At least one song from Crowe's wife, Nancy Wilson of Heart. "Jerry MacGuire" featured Sandy, on Singles she used the alias the Lovemongers.

2. An obscure Who track. Crowe clearly believes that if you multiply longevity by creativity, The Who are the greatest rock band of all time. He presents further evidence herein.

3. The rescue of a great ballad from obvilion to standard. With MacGuire, Crowe salvaged the bittersweet "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen. Here, he does the same for the achingly tender "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John. (As a side note, there's a good chance this track could finally become a single, some 28 years after its release. With that, Elton could extend to 31 years his record of consecutive Top 40 singles.)

4. A brilliant and eclectic collection of tracks that you will grow to love.

Remember, this movie takes place circa 1973. We could have been subjected to Tony Orlando & Dawn, the Stories and Clint Holmes, or else yet another collection of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and ELP. Instead, the songs have been carefully culled, mixing soul, pop and rock into a brilliant pastiche of the era.

This one's a keeper. And expect to see the movie in several Oscar categories too!

Free Music Review: 18 all over again!
Hit: 5 Stars

OK, I will make this a quick one. If you survived the 70's, congratulations. I know I had more fun than in any other decade of my life. Listen up, this CD is a perfect companion to the DVD. I just watched the video not long ago, and it brought tears to my eyes as I remembered the music, the house parties, the drunken reverie, and just plain old good times. You could walk around at 2:00 AM and not worry about getting mugged or shot. The movie takes place around 1973 - my senior year of high school! I loved the music on this! I had to smile when I heard "Sparks" from the Who - this song is featured on a car commercial now. Good choice of Zeppelin songs. Too bad the Stones wouldn't play nice and contribute. By the way, reading the reviews makes it apparent that a lot of people are unfamiliar with the Zeppelin tunes. Hey, every serious music fan of the 70's MUST own every Zeppelin CD. Mandatory item. Also every Lynyrd Skynyrd CD up through "Street Survivors". And every Allman Brothers CD through "Brothers and Sisters". This CD is a pretty good sampler and souvenir of the movie. Get it!

Free Music Review: Move over Dazed and Confused
Hit: 5 Stars

This album definately heralds the title of best soundtrack ever. Even to a kid like myself (only 18) this soundtrack does a stellar job of bringing me back to a era of which I unfortunately missed out on. From the get go this soundtrack knocks you off your feet. Relatively obscure titles that one might have only expected from Crowe, each one suits the story well and creates an unbelievable atmosphere for the movie(with the possible exception of Rod Stewart). Elton John's Tiny Dancer was an outstanding touch and it was good to hear Cat Stevens revitalized. This definately could have been made into a 2 disc set as there were some noticable exceptions from the list. Elton John's Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters, Zeppelin's Tangerine, Iggy Pop's Search and Destroy and Sabbath's Sweet Leaf could definately have completed this CD more fully. But alas the music for the film cost a wopping 3.5 million already! Congrats to Crowe! This soundtrack removes the long standing Dazed and Confused,in my mind, as the best collection of songs in a movie to date.

Free Music Review: Great soundtrack from a great film!
Hit: 5 Stars

ALMOST FAMOUS is the best movie I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't have the soundtrack yet, but I'm dying to get it. I'm a teenager, and I have to say that I'm not really into the '70s style rock 'n roll...but this film has changed my opinion on '70s rock music! My favorite track on this soundtrack is the one by Elton John, "Tiny Dancer", the one the cast sang on their tour bus in the movie. Hopefully, whoever made this soundtrack will come up with a volume 2 and add the version of "Tiny Dancer" that the cast sang in the movie - that would be so cool! I loved all the other songs played in the movie, too. The reason why I'm saying they should make a volume 2 is because there are so many other songs played in the film that aren't listed here on this soundtrack. And if we're lucky, they might even end up making a volume 3! Go out and buy this soundtrack and see the movie...you won't regret any of it!
