Free Music Notes for Hope Floats: Music From The Motion PictureFree Music Review: Hope Floats....... Hit: 5 Starswas a great movie. I bought this CD as a gift for a friend, she enjoys it.
Free Music Review: EVERYONE LISTEN!!! Hit: 3 StarsFor some confused reviewers out there, just to set the story straight-the song "Make You Feel My Love" was written by Bob Dylan, not Garth Brooks. I've got nothing against Garth, but give credit where credit is due!
Free Music Review: A great album. Hit: 5 StarsJust wanted to let anyone reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 about how misleading these reviews are, is completely wrong!! Musicfan is talking about a totally different CD. He/She wanted the album with "various artists" but bought the wrong one containing the "original movie soundtrack". This is a great album and worth every cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The "various artists" album has 13 tracks. Just trying to clear up some confusion!
Free Music Review: Too Little For The Money! Hit: 3 StarsWhen I saw the film credits for soundtrack--composer/jazz musician Dave Grusin--a favorite of mine from days past, I said to myself "This has GOT to be a winner!" BUT...I jumped into the pool before checking there was water in there. It's good, don't get me wrong--but typical Grusin, suprisingly too little piano (his trademark) soulful OR jazz and the CD's 11 selections come off like any other pop album rather than segwayed into a true "soundtrack" experience. I tried hard to hear scenes from the film there, but failed in that effort missing two of the best, 1] the dance hall scene featuring Birdee and Jason (Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr.), and 2] the successful attempt to get Bernice out of the dumps by her family/school chums in a lip-synced and to me--hilarious--scenario, two of the best from the film. Then to top that disappointment, the CD last only 30 minutes and some seconds, WAY TOO SHORT considering the music I heard watching the film, and making the CD pretty pricey for the music provided. It's good Grusin, but sorry to say I didn't find much--if any--Hope Floats there. (Sorry Dave!)
Free Music Review: A Little Lift For Your Day.... Hit: 5 StarsThis review refers to the CD edition of "Hope Floats: Music From The Motion Picure" (Various Artists - Soundtrack)....
"When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love...." (Garth Brooks)
Those words are just a taste of the beautiful lyrics to be found on this album. The CD is filled with poignant moments, you'll want to listen to again and again.
"Hope Floats" directed by Forest Whitaker, is a beautiful film. The story revolves around Birdie, a woman who has been terribly hurt by her husband and best friend. She loses all self-esteem, and builds a wall around herself that is so strong, it seems like nobody will ever break through again. Whitaker has added the perfect soundtrack to this story. The music and words are beautiful and meaningful. They are a strong statement, speaking of all the emotions Birdie is going through, and how those close to her bring her the strength she needs to recover, count her blessings, and open her heart once again.
Every track evokes some sort of emotion, from a smile to a tear. It's a great mix of different styles. Lyle Lovett's rendition of "Smile" may even bring goose bumps or a lump to your throat. "Chances Are" is a wonderfully touching duet from Bob Seger and Martina McBride. Also included are The Rolling Stones' "Honest I Do", Garth Brooks', "To Make You Feel My Love", also a lovely version by Trisha Yearwood of that one, Sheryl Crow's "In Need", a fabulous rendition of "Stop In The Name Of Love" by Jonelle Mosser, and Bryan Adams' beautiful tones are oh so recognizable in "When You Love Someone". (For a complete list of songs and artists, please see the buying info.)
I am an avid film viewer, and every once in a while the music from the film touches me as much as the film itself. This is one of those soundtracks that I just couldn't get enough of. It's perfect for that lunch break, maybe on a day when things aren't going so great. The music is calming, and the words will give you just that lift you need to get you through the rest of the day. If you have seen the film you will relive all the wonderful moments. Even if you haven't, the music speaks for itself.
The CD sounds great on the stereo. And by the way, it comes with a booklet with all the words to each song and includes some photos from the film as well. It's a CD that seems to be hard to come by right now. Be patient, watch the outside sellers for a good deal(you may want to check with them to be sure the booklet is included). I am including the ASIN because there seems to be some confusion between the soundtrack with various artists(this one), and the movie score itself. ASIN: B000006359
"If you smile through your fears and sorrows,
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through...."(Lyle Lovett)
Enjoy....Laurie
