Free Music Notes for Across The Universe [Deluxe Edition]Free Music Review: Excellent, top notch, modern interpretations! Hit: 5 Stars
Everything about this CD is fantastic, the choice of material, the production, the performances (both the instruments and vocals). Dana Fuchs singing "Oh Darling" and "Helter Skelter" in a Janis Joplin style is a marriage made in heaven! Thanks to the producers for giving her that opportunity to shine.
Secret Machines happen to be one of my favorite new groups, so having them perform "Flying" "Blue Jay Way" and "I Am the Walrus" with Bono is out of this world baby!
I'm not mentioning the other vocalists because they are new to me and their names don't come to mind BUT...they are OUTSTANDING! They breath new life into these songs (not that they need it, of course) and it is so refreshing to know that young people today have a chance to be exposed to this music in such a fresh, wonderful way. Spread the word, these CD's need to be heard! The Beatles are as incredible today as they were in the 60's. They, and their music (when done right-like here) will live forever.
However, I feel there is no excuse in the marketing of this product in that the public should be exploited in the sense of having 2 special editions. It truly is sad (and a sign of the times).
After reading the reviews in regards to Best Buys, I returned the CD (got my money back from the store I purchased it at) and purchased the one with the two extra bonus tracks. Shame on the marketing people who thought they should hold back info (and product) from the public. "How do You Sleep at Night?"
Free Music Review: Across the Universe Hit: 5 Stars
This soundtrack is, in my opinion, one of the best movie soundtracks I've heard in a long time. Perhaps this is because I've always loved The Beatles. Some highlights of this soundtrack, minus the missing two songs (which I don't find too upsetting that they're not included), are "I Want to Hold Your Hand" sung by T.V. Carpio whose voice is absolutely heart breaking and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" sung by Martin Luther McCoy which is definitely a sweet surprise. Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson leave you stunned as they belt out their solos, and even Dana Fuchs has some surprise duets which are pretty good.
However, like all soundtracks there are some weak songs that I wouldn't listen to everyday, but none-the-less do have some merit. After all, the producers haven't removed all of The Beatles' genius in some of the re-formatted songs with crazy guitar riffs that scrape the ears but still seem surprisingly pleasant. But there is something in this two-disc set for everyone. There's gospel, jazz, a Capella, folk, alternative, some hardcore relatives, and of course rock and roll. There is not a weak singer in the bunch, and if you haven't seen the movie perhaps this is best because it makes you appreciate the music even more (for example, the crazy football scene in the background may take away some of the beauty of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for some). But still make sure you see the film. It's definitely not to be missed, nor is this soundtrack.
Free Music Review: Great from start to finish Hit: 5 Stars
These are great renditions of classic Beatles songs. I am a Beatles fan despite growing up in the 80's and 90's, and this movie and soundtrack have really done John, Paul, George and Ringo proud. They have effectively ushered these songs into the twenty first century for a new generation to enjoy.
Songs from the Beatles' early days, such as, "I want to hold your hand" and "All my loving" especially benefit from an updating that tones down a bee-bop doo-whop sound that people now just in their twenties and thirties will never understand. No fault to the Beatles, they were just victims of the time period.
As someone who grew up on musicals like "Annie" and "Grease", it's great to see a new musical after many years geared to adults in movie format that somehow manages to avoid being totally corny. This is a great collection of songs that I will be sure to enjoy for years to come...alongside the incomparable originals, of course!
Of course the purists aren't going to like these covers, that goes without saying. I am not sure why such an individual would even leave a review here, except for the opportunity to complain. Bottom line is that it's an inspired and creative album, period.
I saw that one reviewer claimed it is sinful to remake Beatle's tunes. If Paul and Ringo themselves don't mind, (which they don't, they both praised the film), then it shouldn't bother anyone else either.
Free Music Review: The best Beatles' covers ever recorded! Hit: 5 Stars
It's has been ages since my last review of a product on amazon.com. However, I felt I needed to write about the deluxe version of "Across the universe". This soundtrack is amazing, with the best covers of Beatles' songs ever recorded. It's great to see how talented the cast of this movie is, starting with Jim Sturgess, who is a great actor and an outstanding singer. He sings with his soul, interpreting the lyrics of the songs. I like his british accent, which fits perfectly to the music composed by the Beatles. Dana Fuchs has a powerful voice and her recordings make the movie even better. The song selection was perfect for the movie and each song becomes meaningful on the context of the story that is told. It works as if the songs were characters on "Across the Universe. I love this deluxe edition because it brings almost all the songs of the movie, besides a booklet with good pictures and the lyrics to all the songs, which is rare nowadays. The soundtrack also has the collaboration of Bono Vox, Joe Cocker and Salma Hayek. It's hard to make comments on Beatles'songs, because they are all great, but I especially like the versions to "All my loving" (lovely!), "I want to hold your hand", "It won't be long" (it sticks to your head like a bubble gum!) and "Strawberry fields forever" (very emotional). It's not a surprise that this CD is one of the best sellers on amazon.com. Don't think twice...buy!
Free Music Review: Waves of Joy Hit: 5 Stars
The first single-disc edition of the soundtrack had 16 tracks, 6 from the first deluxe disc and 10 from the second. This is an extremely engaging soundtrack for those who saw the film and love the Beatles' music. Joe Cocker's version of "Come Together" blasts relentlessly with his vocal swagger putting an emotional payload on Lennon's obscure lyric, "He wear no shoe shine, he got toe jam football, he got monkey finger, he shoot coca cola." Evan Rachel Wood sounds like she's having a blast on "It Won't Be Long." She makes it sound fresh, "Since you left me, I'm so alone; Now you're coming on home." T.V. Caprio's "I Want to Hold Your Hand" aches emotionally with the familiar throbbing bass line putting a chronic smile on my face. The Dana Fuchs Band with Rachel Evan Wood does my favorite track on the CD, the breezy "Because" with gorgeous vocal harmonies, "Because the wind is high, it blows my mind." Jim Sturgess' take on the John Lennon's title track is excellent with its sense of spiritual exploration and longing, "Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind, possessing and caressing me." Dana Fuchs Band blows away the under-appreciated "Don't Let Me Down" with a powerful emotional wallop. The deluxe version of the soundtrack takes great material from Lennon, McCartney & Harrison and produces one of the best celebrations of their work. Enjoy!
