Free Music Review: Thanks to the movie - I started to like these oldies but goldies. Hit: 5 Stars
I missed all of Beatles era almost completely, because of I was not even born yet. In my time: PF, LZ, UH, DP and ... were my heroes.
I had a Beatles album when I was a kid, but it never rang a bell for me. It sounded to me like a school band.
After watching a movie, for the first time in my entire live I was moved to buy an Audio CD with the songs. Thanks for these new young voices, modern and alternative interpretation - I actually was able to truly enjoy timeless Beatles songs for the first time in my live.
Beatles fans may still think there is nothing better than Beatles themselves. The songs are great, but original Beatles recordings are dated. Fortunately there are other options now. I think more young people would enjoy Beatles song when every song is matched near perfect with an artist capable to make the best of it. I think this movie and this CD is the best so far. My kids love it.
Free Music Review: Music is better than the film Hit: 5 Stars
The "Across the Universe" film is plagued by a diluted meandering script that manages to rise above mediocrity when the songs are playing....the musical segments are original and at times, stunning.
No gripes about the vocal performances; the re-worked Beatles songs are treated with respect and convincingly sung by the cast. I have my favorites, but I can say that there's not a clunker in the bunch.
The film would have tanked without the Beatles music and the love of fans from across the generations. I am also pleased to find out that so many kids are finally understanding why my generation thinks the Beatles are the greatest rock band ever.
P.S. I feel that the most effective use of adapted Beatles music was in the film "I Am Sam". Great heart wrenching script, stellar acting, and great versions of Beatle classics. Buy that soundtrack with this one!
Free Music Review: This is a must see Hit: 5 Stars
If you grew up loving the Beatles music - then this is a must see!
But beyond that .....
What impressed me was how the Beatles songs were used
As if they were part of the story and not separate from it.
Also - the singers have marvelous voices.
I am so attached to the voices and instrumentals of the Beatles
I did not think I would enjoy new renditions of their songs with other voices. But they are as good (in a different way) as the originals.
Especially the singers who play the main leads - Jude (actor: Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (actress: Evan Rachel Wood)
Jo Cocker, Bono, Eddie Izzard and Selma Hayek also brought tremendous personality to this film.
On top of that it was nominated for an academy award for "Best Costume"
Which I think had a lot to do with Eddie Izzard singing his ad lib as a circus ring master.
Free Music Review: QUITE SIMPLY THE BEST NEW TAKE ON THE BEATLES IN 43 YEARS! Hit: 5 Stars
I can remember watching The Beatles on Ed Sullivan on my Zenith 19" black and white portable clear as day...I remember the day Sgt Pepper coming out, and debating its merits with friends...have followed Paul through several tours, and marvelled and the 5.1 mixes of the Beatles, er, middle aged mash on the LoVE soundtrack.
When all is said and done, Across The Universe - Julie Taymor's version of Moulin Rouge set to Beatles tunes - represants the best new take on the Beatles songs that I've ever hears.
The artists - relative unknowns - all sing the hell out of these songs. The arrangements are fun, lively, dynamic - classic while modern to the ears.
These are exciting discs - and a welcome addition to the Beatles discography.
Go out and buy 'em today - help Paul defray the costs of his divorce to that money-grubbing Polythene Pam.........
