Free Music Notes for Arabic Groove (Putumayo Presents)Free Music Review: nice introduction to recent dance-oriented Arab music Hit: 4 Stars
Nice sampler of dance music from twelve artists hailing from five North African and the Middle Eastern countries (and in the case of Natacha Atlas, the UK). With the exception of Khaled's "Mauvais Sang" (1992), the cuts are from 1997-2000. Highpoints: the (uncredited) soul chanteuse vocals on Abdy's "Galbi," the use of undulating ululations instead of synth squiggles in Hamid El Shaeri's "Hely Mely," Natacha Atlas' Arabic trip-hop "Kidda," and Cheb Tarik's relentlessly syncretic "L'histoire" in which he manages to jam rai, reggae, hip-hop, and dancehall into one cut. Not definitive, and everyone can come up with cuts that they would have liked to see included, but a pretty nice introduction to recent dance-oriented Arab music, nonetheless.
Free Music Review: Dance Off Doctrine Hit: 4 Stars
I was initially frustrated that the overuse of electronic enhancements on the acoustic instruments made the arrangements sound like they all used the same drum machine. However, as I've become more familiar with Algerian Rai, it's clear that's not the case. This compilation is an excellent sampler of vibrant pop music, regardless of whether or not you understand the lyrics. One standout for me is Khaled, whose other recordings I recommend. Also exceptional is Natacha Atlas. Her peice "Kidda" is a knockout - a revved up moan that is the female voice I've been waiting to hear for many years. (kind of a Callas/Janis fusion).
Free Music Review: Wonderful! Hit: 4 Stars
This CD is full of great "pop" songs. It keeps me going and my spirits high at work. I especially like how each artist has a short bio and a short summary for each song, along with photos. I enjoy knowing about each artist's background and style. It gives me a better understanding of what I am listening to.
