I'm sure the gents in this Chicago based outfit are tired of being compared to Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch and Opeth, but I believe that this Folk inspired, down tempo disc can best be described by cross referencing said bands. There is a touch of Doom here as well as a touch of Black Metal, but it's the infusion of Folk that wraps all the flowing compositions into one cohesive whole. Even with all this genre blending "Sovereign Nocturnal" stands as its very own beastie. The album is made up of three epic tracks comprised of an ever flowing and changing soundscapes. If you aren't a patient person and prefer your Metal in bite sized little chunklets this one t'aint for you. One will more then likely not uncover all the twists and turns this disc has to offer on the first listen. Hell, the third, fourth and fifth time you spin this will still reveal more subtle nuances. Discovery of this album's many joys takes time, and therein lies one of "Sovereign Nocturnal's" many strengths. Housed in an eco friendly, ultra slim digi-pack, this album may easily be confused with a demo or promo in outward appearance, but rest assured that this is one very satisfying full length. I think something great has been touched on here and urge all who appreciate the more subtle side of Metal to give this album a listen.
