Free Music Notes for Velvet Goldmine: Music From The Original Motion Picture

Free Music Review: The best soundtrack album EVER - even if Bowie wasn't involved
Hit: 5 Stars

Simply, this is the BEST soundtrack CD ever recorded, bar none, hands down, no contest. Why? On first...or millionth...listen, the entire album captures the film, the world, the era, the style, and the sound expertly, effortlessly - but it's not just an empty gesture or a slick impersonation, VG amplifies and expands the authentic glam vision to create something somehow more glam, deeper, more intense, more addictive, sexy, heartbreaking, uplifting, even dangerous - once you see the movie, and once you hear these songs, you'll play them over & over, come back to them year after year, and they'll become the fabric of your own life - or your imagined life, past, present, future, or even a fond, faded memory of what never was. The most jaw-dropping achievement of the album, aside from impeccable taste (Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, T Rex, anyone?) is that since Todd Haynes didn't get permission from Bowie to use his own music, he went out and recruited the coolest rock icons and upstars to create songs that amazingly feel like they are long-lost nuggets circa 72/73, but were really made in 99 - it's not just playing dress up, it's redefining a whole musical and cultural era. This is Haynes' BEST film, and this is the BEST soundtrack. Sadly, as usual, the movie was a flop upon its original theatrical release - I recall going to see if on a rainy Saturday matinee on its first-weekend release, and there were only two people in the theater, me and the usher. No matter, this album is a real achievement, never to be repeated again, so savor it now.

I have never been a fan of anything post Pony Express Record, by Shudder to Think. But the two songs they do on this album are utter gems. Hot One is the first good song you'll come across on the album. It sounds like a mix between Mack the Knife and Repeater-age Fugazi. Which is just plain sexy. Then comes the song 20th Century Boy, by Placebo. I've never been a fan of Placebo...and I merely think this song is okay. It starts off brilliantly, with plenty of promise, but then never really goes anywhere. Then comes 2HB by The Venus in Furs(sung by Thome Yorke from Radiohead). This song is so melodic and beautiful. Another gem. Then comes another not note worthy song. Then...then comes The Ballad of Maxwell Demon, probably my favorite song on the album. The lyric "I came down like water, for the age of solar" Is just simply gorgeous and beautifully sung. And next you get hit by The Whole Shebang. It's a light-hearted song, but with plently of depth. It's rather fun to listen to frequently. I have fallen in love with it. The rest of the CD pretty much dwindles until you hit Satellite of Love by Lou Reed(lead singer from The Velvet Underground). This song is rather humorous with lyrics like "I love to watch things on TV" and a warbly "Satellite of love" which is just spectacular. All in all this album is a true gem, everyone should own it. All the good songs are original and new, and just plain interesting. I love this album. A personal favorite.

This is a fantastic soundrack, but only if you like this kind of music. The music I am talking about is "Glam Rock" This is a style of music where the look of the band is as important as there sound. If you liked the T-Rex or Slade or old David Bowie you will adore this nostalgic romp through the early seventies. The albums highlights are "T V eye" and "personality Crisis" they do justice to the original songs, TV eye actually has the lead vocalist screaming in the begining and louds of cool fuzzbox thrashing at the end. The rest of the record goes from pop type songs complete with piano, to old original flash-glam rock of the period. It is a fiting tribute to a musical style that was short lived becouse it was not made to last. The music was like Boones Farm wine, sure you loved it for a while, it was tasty but then you got a headache after too much. The film is good too, but a little extreme, I loved both of them. I bought the soundrack after walking out of the theater and paid too much, amazon would have saved my about 5 dallars, but I was to psyched to wait. Check out Slade and other glam bands here at amason they have an extensive collection of music from this time period that is unavailable in even the most ecclectic record shops.

This was a great film. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Knowing nothing about the glam rock period before seeing this film, I have since learned plenty. Everything about the film I loved, and one of the things that was vital to the film was the music. Which was amazing. I especaily love the "Babies on fire" song and scene in the film, cause Brain goes crazy with Curt's guitar... hehe...ehem. Gee I wonder where they got that idea?
For thoes of you who just like or love David Bowie, T-Rex, Placebo (who are in the film under a different name) Iggy Pop, Roxy Music ect... ect... will love this soundtrack. The music is campy and very cliche, but that is what they were going for since they didn't have the rights for David's music. * Though if you listen closely, in the backround on " Satillite of love" you can hear David singing backups.* Opps! Something he probably wasn't to happy about. Its immposible to pick a favorite song... though " 20th century boy" would be close. Another fav is " Sabation" Which sadly doesn't apper on the soundtrack.
In closing this soundtrack, is garented to entertain you. Its tons of fun and memeories. And like it says on the back of Ziggy Stardust... It is to be played at maximum volume.

Free Music Review: My Most Played CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This is and has been for some time, my favorite cd, and everyone I have forced to sit down and listen to it, has also loved it(especially Placebo singing 20th century boy), even if they didn't appreciate the movie as much as i did(by the way it is also my favorite movie, you know the one you have to watch at least once a week.) I do agree that Sebastion and do ou wanna touch me should have been included, but I also think Ewan McGregor singing gimme danger should have been, cause he did an excellent job. I was surprised to see that no one mentioned Thom Yorke. I think he was wonderful to lend his voice, and it shows how talented he is. I love Radiohead, but to hear him do something altogether different was great, and actually i really couldn't even pinpoint his voice, until i read his name, and then it clicked in my head that it was his voice i was hearing on several tracks. He was great. And I was very glad and surprised to hear how wonderful two actors could do. Everyone was so impressed with McGregors singing in Moulon Rouge, but We all knew how great he was long before that. Well I guess I have said my piece, although I could go on forever about his album if i could(I often rant to others about the soundtrack and film.)
