Free Music Notes for Velvet Goldmine: Music From The Original Motion PictureFree Music Review: hooray for glam-rock!!! Hit: 5 Stars
ahhh. the wonder of a great soundtrack. the, 'romeo and juliet,' soundtrack pulled it off, and so did the one from, 'great expectations.' but this one really takes the cake, offering us a mixture of classic songs, new songs, and classic songs covered by new bands.the album starts of with the great brian eno song, 'needle in the camels eye,' but then goes into the lilting beauty of shudder to think's, 'hot one,' easily one of the best songs on the album. placebo really earn their glam rock points for a phenomenal cover to t-rex's, '20th century boy,' which could easily be compared with the original. a very interesting thing that was done for this album, was that two new bands with all-star line-ups were made especially for the film. the venus in furs, which consists of members of radiohead and suede (who do great versions of roxy music songs), and the wylde rattz, which has thurston moore on guitar and ewan mcgregor on vocals (they do a cover of, 'tv eye,' by the stooges). the rest of the album is great too. an original from pulp, a classic from lou reed (the schmaltzy yet endearing, 'satellite of love,') and great offering from teenage fanclub. the movie was great, but the soundtrack blows it away.
Free Music Review: an exquisite collection of fluff Hit: 5 Stars
If you've seen the movie you know what an integral part the music plays in the film. It is no wonder that the soundtrack is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's the best compilation album from people who didn't exist (plus some from those who did).I really wish they would come out with another soundtrack album because this album is missing a lot from the movie. Notably: Jonathan's recording of Sebastian from the concert and Ewan's cover of Iggy Pop's Gimme Danger. These recordings were of performances in the film that were vital to the plot and it is a shame they are not included on the album while other less important songs were. Also some of the old glam songs used in the film are missing from the soundtrack, including: Gary Glitter's Do You Want to Touch Me and Slade's Cuz I Love You. (I also want to know where to get that freaky, freaky song. I don't know where it's from.) As with any soundtrack album coming from a film with this much music in it not all of it could have been included on one album, I just wish they had released a second. All in all, this is one of the best albums in my personal collection and should be in your's as well.
Free Music Review: Velvet Surprise Hit: 5 Stars
When I first saw that this film revolved around 70's glam and did not contain David Bowie songs, I boycotted. Then, I noticed the title "Velvet Goldmine" is a pure rip-off of a Bowie song. If that wasn't enough, after forcing myself to see the film, they try to tell a loose story about a Ziggy Stardust-like rock star without touching the rock hero they celebrate and imitate. Having said all that, the music on this album is so excellent and creative that the aforementioned sins are forgiven instantly. The big surprise on this album is Shudder to Think, with their marvelous gems "Hot One" and "Ballad of Maxwell Demon" scorching up this record to white hot status. Also commendable are the wonderful melodies of "2HB" and "Ladytron" by the assembled band known as Venus In Furs, with Thom Yorke on vocals. Finally, "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" by Steve Harley is the number one song on the record, with its ability to cheer up even a Wall Street trader who invested his life fortune in a dot-com two years ago. "So close your eyes. Take a little trip. And boogaloo a rhapsody divine..."
Free Music Review: REMEMBERABLE TIMES Hit: 5 Stars
Saw the movie when it came out in '98 and watched it again the other night. It is hard to separate the movie from the CD. I forgot how Great it was, as is the soundtrack. While the 3 obvious artists are missing...Bowie, Pop and Dolls, the remainder are not slugs by any means. In fact, behind Bowie, Roxy Music was one of my favorite artists during the glam period. How well I remember seeing Bowie at age 17 in his first US show at Carneige Hall. He was sold out, so we snuck in. If any artist I ever identified with, it was he. The track listings, minues the Bowie cuts, are some of the finest for the period. "Baby's on Fire", always one of my favorite Eno songs is surprisngly well done and true to the original, and in my opinion is the best "cover" track. It is understandable why Bowie did not lend his music to the movie, it doesn't exactly flater him. Yet the portraits of Reed and Pop are true and honest, and not flatering as well...yet their music is there. A great compilation CD for those who grew up remembering a time when rock 'n' roll really began to suck (it turned itself around with punk in the late '70s) and something wonderful took its place!
