Free Music Notes for Velvet Goldmine: Music From The Original Motion PictureFree Music Review: The Doors (of Glam) are open Hit: 5 Stars
Certainly, this soundtrack doesn't contain all the songs of the film (otherwise it would have been a double cd, wouldn't it?), and the lack of a masterpiece like Cosmic Dancer is incredible, but listening to this cd has gave me a complete mindblow; not only, has encouraged me to discover David Bowie, which, even if he didn't allow using his songs (generous as usual) has been the great inspiration of fantastic new and truely glam pieces like The Ballad of Maxwell Demon. And then have come the beautyful Marc Bolan, the New York Dolls, Roxy Music and Brian Eno, a whole new musical world where everything is "perfect, and venomous". To conclude, don't waist this oportunity, if you don't know much about those glitterig years but you have been fascinated by what you saw in the film, this disc is the first step to a stairway to heaven.
Free Music Review: Great soundtrack true to movie Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD within a couple of days of having seen the movie because the music just grabbed my attention all throughout. I have listened to it repeatedly ever since. I love it so much that I carry it back and forth between home and work. It ranges from soft slow ballads to really fast rock songs. I listen to it full blast while cleaning the house or softly while I read a book or surf the net. It lends itself really well to both kinds of activities. "Ballad of Maxwell Demon," "2HB," "The Whole Shebang," "Baby's on Fire," "20th Century Boy," and "Satellite of Love" are all *fantastic* songs, but "Hot One" is very definitely my favorite. Now if I could only find the lyrics on the net, I'd be sooo happy.
Free Music Review: Essential to any music lover's collection!!! Hit: 5 Stars
wow. all i have to say is wow. The best thing about this movie is that it truly is ALL about the music. I actually couldn't even reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who hasn't seen the film. There are some excellent classics on this album, and some great new re-makes of classics. But above all, I must praise (worship??) the two Shudder to Think tracks. They're totally amazing pieces of songwriting. This is a must for fans of glitter and David Bowie. Truthfully, David's approval of the project wouldn't have made it any better..I'm glad he refused to let his music to be used on the soundtrack. It's left room open for other great tracks and allowed for complete, 100% originality on the parts of Todd Haynes and Michael Stipe.
Free Music Review: Glam Rocks Oddyssey Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is a superb collection of some of the best glam rock has to offer. A wonderful combination of 70's classics, and 90's originals. Thom Yorke's vocals are haunting and absolutely beautiful, definately with a Bowie-esque quality that makes the newer pieces completely indistinguishable. Although Todd Haynes was reluctnat to allow Jonathan Rhys Meyers to perform his vocals, the end result is beautiful. One could only wish for more. The exclusion of pieces like Steve Harley's Sebastian, and Iggy's Gimme Danger are truly a loss, but the music that is featured definately compensates. This CD features music for all moods, and even those listeners who are not die-hard fans of glam rock can find something to enjoy.
Free Music Review: Wham, Glam, Thank Ya Ma'am Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, let me say that I agree with the previous reviewer who said that if this movie were to have a Bowie song in it, it would be less effective. However, Bowie is present throughout this disc. (Even doing back-up vocals for Lou Reed). The originals that were written for the film have sister Bowie songs. I actually prefer these versions of the Roxy Music songs than the originals. (Truth be told, I'm not a Roxy Music fan). An almost verbatim cover of 20th Century Boy by Placebo is a nice touch. I do find it somewhat odd that their aren't any Queen or Mott The Hoople songs here. (Or their American counterparts Alice Cooper and Kiss, for that matter). All in all, a must for glam rock fans.
