Free Music Notes for Bootleg Series, Vol. 1: The Quine Tapes

Free Music Review: Essential Recording
Hit: 5 Stars

I just bought this album today, and it was well worth the wait. The Velvet Underground are guite simply one of the greatest live bands of all time, and The Quine Tapes perfectly complements the legendary 1969 live album. The latter should be purchased before this album, but The Quine Tapes is still essential, simply because of the dearth of quality Velvet Underground live recordings.

However, the sound on these discs is not impeccable but, considering the source, are very good for concerts captured with a hand-held cassette recorder. The sound starts off rather poorly, with some of the lyrics unintelligible, but improves quickly with only the occasional aberration. For the most part, The Quine Tapes remain bass-heavy, but, despite these flaws, the recording loses hardly any of its power.

As always with the VU, the material is simply amazing when compared to many other groups. However, many of the songs do appear on Live 1969, albeit from different concerts, and the versions here are hardly a revelation or even very much different. "I'm Waiting For The Man" and "What Goes On" are somewhat inferior to their 1969 counterparts, but there are several standout tracks. "Foggy Notion" is a great song live with Moe Tucker kicking the song off, and the song benefits from its shorter rendering here. It's an absolute delight to hear Maureen sing "After Hours" and "I'm Sticking With You," both of which are delivered charmingly. The version of "Sister Ray" which closes out Disc One is masterful, with some great Lou Reed vocals and guitar work, but it still remains a group effort. Sterling Morrison shines throughout, truly matching his name. Doug Yule is excellent on bass and the occasional organ (on both of which instruments, however, he is far overshadowed by John Cale), and Maureen Tucker is simply ethereal on drums. Her simplicity of style is admirably suited to the VU's material and is an epiphany when compared to Billy Yule or Lou Reed's drummer with the Tots. I don't believe I can really add anything to what has already been said about the perfection of the VU's musicianship.

Disc Two isn't quite as good as the first disc. "Follow the Leader," though, is a tremendous song, although the lyrics are a little difficult to make out. I won't even try to describe the song, as music should be experienced rather than written about, and such attempts to limn musical ventures often are futile and fall far short of the mark. "Venus in Furs" is a rather paltry offering without the distinctive and integral touches of John Cale's viola. "Heroin" is given a powerful rendition, but it is almost impossible to deliver such a aesthetic masterpiece impotently. The "Sister Ray" from Disc Two is a little less successful than that of Disc One, and the former, at 38 minutes in length, is a tad unfocused, but it is still a great version of a tremendous song - one of the VU's best.

I consider Disc Three to be the most powerful, with some truly inspired performances. "Rock and Roll," while previously released on 1969 Live, is still a perfectly realized version. "New Age" contains some great new lyrics, though similar to the ones on 1969, and is probably the best version of the song I've heard. "The Black Angel's Death Song" is somewhat of a disappointment as it fails to include Reed's vocal hissing as on the studio version; still, this performance captures all of the song's idiosyncracy. "I'm Waiting for the Man" is simply the best live version of the song that I've heard, with some great new lyrics that I believe were extemporaneously conceived. And the third version of "Sister Ray" is the most successful of the three included in this set, containing a verse of "Foggy Notion" and a fragment from the coda to "The Murder Mystery," and it features Reed's most charmingly demented singing.
The Quine Tapes is worth the price for this disc alone, and this set is simply another testament to the greatness of the Velvet Underground as a live act.

Yet, the incarnation of the VU with John Cale was much more adventurous and experimental, and he is sorely missed on The Quine Tapes. Cale was as essential a member of the VU as lou Reed. Cale was as vital to the music as Reed was to the lyrics; in fact, Cale's solo outings are much truer to the VU's legacy than Reed's both musically and lyrically, but I am going off on a tangent. I would love to see a live VU album from the Cale period, but I know very few quality tapes exist from that era. And while the post-Cale VU is still a great band, they are very different from an aesthetic standpoint, almost a completely different band;for Doug Yule, while a great rock musician, is simply not comparable to Cale.
Still this album is a wonderful testament to one of the great rock bands.

While not quite perfectly realized live documents, spontaneity and intimacy and a resulting raw feeling exist in The Quine Tapes as in few other live albums. That's possibly due to the smallness of the venue and the audience, but it attests more to the personal nature of the VU's music - that incredible swagger mixed with aching vulnerability - both of which are in evidence here.
