Free Music Review: Sound ruins (what may be) a great performance.

When I came along and discovered opera on recording, it was at a time when one thought one had to chose between Callas and Tebaldi: i chose Tebaldi and have only come to realize that it was foolish to deny myself the very separate pleasures to be derived from each of them.
One of the earliest reviews that I think I remember reading was of this recording of Trovatore in which it was compared with the Tebaldi and Milanov recordings. I have had the Milanov recording for some time and it is wonderful. I have not heard the Tebladi recording. I just got this one and looked forward to yet another revelation of the Callas art of the sort I found on her Butterfly, Rigoletto, Lucia(s) and Norma(s) to mention but a few. This performance may be wonderful, but NOWEHERE have I seen anyone comment on what a terrible recording this is. The voices are barely above the inherent noice of the tape or disc and the thudding bass is extremely annoying. If one were buying a "live performace" such as the Mexico City Aida or the Berlin Lucia, one come make excuses, but this is a studio recording. In fact this sounds very much like the Caball?-Vickers Norma from the Festival at Orange performed in the face of a wind storm -- which wind is picked up with stunning high fidelity by the microphones.
A great performance it may be but the poor sound gets in the way of the performance.
One star . . . barely . . . because of the sound.

Maria Callas's voice was never noted for its sheer beauty, but she was in her best form for this session and she knew exactly what to do with what she had. She might not make the distraught figure of Leonora rationally credible, but she knows more about acting with her voice than anyone this side of Sir John Gielgud. And she puts Leonora's emotions, her vulnerability, her whole-hearted, self-sacrificial love, squarely before the listener. Herbert von Karajan's conducting brings logical coherence to a work not noted for that quality. In short, this is vintage Callas, at the top of her form in some of the greatest music and some of the most intensely emotional situations ever devised for a soprano. Von Karajan--young and not yet burdened with the mannerisms of his later years, is an ideal partner. The other singers, though dwarfed by Callas, provide substantial support. --Joe McLellanClassical Music CDs
