Free Music Review: An Excellent "Historic" Traviata

I am in fundamental agreement with the assessment here by Mr. Cantrell, one of my favorite Amazon reviewers, who writes with his customary blend of wit, style and keen perception. I have owned this Sabajno-conducted recording for decades (it first appeared in long-play format on a pair of RCA Camden LPs). Surprisingly, Sabajno's tempos are at times even faster than Toscanini's. Since both conductors were among the opera's very earliest exponents, this makes me wonder if perhaps everyone since has conducted it too slowly.
As Mr. Cantrell observes, finding an "ideal" Traviata is an elusive goal. This one has some compelling attractions: the young and fresh-voiced Rosza as Violetta, the ardent Ziliani's Alfredo, and perhaps the finest of all Germonts from Borgonuovo. Of course, the 1920's recorded sound is rather antique, though Opera d'Oro's transfers are excellent (a virtual match for my old LPs).
My other favorite Traviatas: the "live" 1958 Callas/Covent Garden recording (once on Verona and other CD labels), which I prefer to her more celebrated 1955 La Scala performance on EMI (Zanasi is a far more sympathetic Germont than 1955's Bastianini, and the sound is vastly superior in 1958). Of the complete & uncut editions, my preference is for the stereo BMG recording with Caballe, even though Pretre's conducting is rather peculiar (some mannered tempos). That set has a fine Germont by Milnes and Bergonzi's incomparably elegant Alfredo.
Perhaps someday RCA/BMG will re-issue RCA LP LM 1115 "Highlights From La Traviata." That disc featured Licia Albanese, Jan Peerce and Robert Merill in performances that were better sung and characterized than what they did in Toscanini's set. The studio conductors of these excerpts were Sylvan Levin, Jean Paul Morel, Victor Trucco, and the venerable Frieder Weissmann.
But for an agreeably entertaining Traviata as it was done in the old days at La Scala, this inexpensive Opera d'Oro CD set is a genuine source of listening pleasure.
