Free Music Review: Victa doin' his thing in FINE form

Still copping his 10 year old licks? He's made a lot of amazing music since 1995's "A Show of Hands." Listen again! "Soul Circus" finds Wooten expanding his musical role from "musical bass player" to "bass playing musician." Though this sort of a title has been around for awhile when describing the great Victor, never has an album illustrated it so well.

The songwriting here is impeccable. Victor clearly has a soft spot for R&B, specifically soul, funk and a dash of hip hop. Understanding that Victor's crazy double-thumb technique is not the way you write music in this genre would do wonders for listeners just wanting to hear Victor "jam."

I could write a paragraph about each song on the album, there's that many good things to say. "Bass Tribute" is probably my favorite track on the disc--it is an INCREDIBLE musical tribute to the great bassists of our time, with Victor impersonating the likes of Stanley, Jaco, Larry, Bootsy, etc...on HIS bass! "Prayer," is a great ode to cross-faith understanding, with a catchy chorus to boot. "Natives," another favorite, features Native musician Bill Miller singing a "pow-wow" few notes in the chorus that literally sounds like 20 people. Those are just my personal favorites from the first five tracks. The rest of the album continues in the same fashion--the lyrical subject is interesting, the singing (did I mention the backup singers, i.e. Saundra Williams are outrageously good?) always tasteful, and the groove so thick you can't physically listen and not move in some way.

As Victor's website (which I highly recommend a visit to, by the way) states, the goal for this album was to "create a very progressive collection of songs where each one can still be played on the radio, much like the music of the 60's and 70's." Not only is this goal admirable, I think it's also imperative. Genius may just be the ability to say something profound using simple language, so that anyone can fully understand it. Any musician attempting--and succeeding the way Victor does--at melding technical virtuosity with mass appeal gets my vote. Why? Because spreading "the word" of good music can never be a bad thing, nevermind the whining of "purists" claiming their babies are selling out. That being said, I think that a thorough, thoughtful listen to "Soul Circus" will prove that Victor accomplished his goal with flying colors.

That's all! In summary, a first-rate album from one of music's most accomplished, gifted, and just-plain-fun bassists.
