Free Music Review: Great compilation of Vikki's music

This is a re-packaging of an earlier compilation, Magic of Vikki Carr, but with an identical track listing. Personally, I slightly prefer the even earlier compilation, Unforgettable, but that is now out of print. This compilation contains more covers and less original material but still includes the essential tracks from the sixties.
Vikki has achieved her greatest successes since focusing on the Latin market, but she recorded plenty of great music in English during the sixties and early seventies. Twenty of her finest English language recordings from the sixties are presented here.
Vikki's first significant success came with He's a rebel, which made the top ten in Australia. It should have been a huge hit for in Britain and America, but Phil Spector heard the song and arranged for the Crystals to record it and they had the British and American hit. Phil Spector and the Crystals were later on the wrong end of such opportunism when they were too late to record It's my party - Lesley Gore hastily released her version as a single, depriving the Crystals of a huge international hit.
Despite that setback, Vikki built a reputation as an albums artist before finally securing a major international hit with It must be him, a translation of a French song written by Gilbert Becaud. Sadly, this was Vikki's only major English-language hit although she had a few others, notably With pen in hand (written by Bobby Goldsboro and also included here).
Vikki shows that she is a brilliant interpreter of other people's songs on Unforgettable (Nat King Cole), Alfie (an American hit for Dionne Warwick and a UK hit for Cilla Black), Can't take my eyes off you (Andy Williams), You don't have to say you love me (Dusty Springfield), Strangers in the night (Frank Sinatra), I only have eyes for you (an oft-covered song originally written in the thirties), For once in my life (Stevie Wonder), Everybody's talking (Nilsson), Tears on my pillow (Little Anthony) and others.
This provides a fine introduction to Vikki's easy listening pop music of the sixties.
