Free Music Review: Vikki sings country songs her way

If Vikki had been born to sing country music, there is no doubt that she could have been very successful, because she always sings with real feeling. The two albums presented here aren't necessarily meant to please country fans, though they sound more like true country than many albums recorded on major labels in Nashville. For these two albums, Vikki selected mainly contemporary country songs but couldn't resist the temptation to include the occasional pop song that a country singer had covered and taken up the country charts. This explains the inclusion of Yesterday when I was young (a Charles Aznavour song), which was a country hit around that time for (I think) Roy Clark. The vast majority of the songs are ballads, which suits me as I think Vikki is particularly good at them, but the up-tempo songs here (such as Make it rain) prove that Vikki can do those songs too. Whatever the tempo, Vikki has a real feel for the material here.
These songs may have been popular with country fans at the time (and some still are) but I'll concede that they aren't all familiar to me. Of course, I recognize the two Tammy Wynette classics (The ways to love a man, Singing my song) although even these songs sum up Vikki's selection policy. She chose songs that were popular at the time, rather than what may be regarded as more obvious songs such as (in the case of Tammy Wynette) Stand by your man and D-I-V-O-R-C-E, which were already old by then. I also recognized Honey, the Booby Goldsboro song, which Vikki sings from a woman's perspective - beyond the grave, as it were, just as Tommy recorded it.
Other famous songs include Raindrops keep falling on my head, Everybody's talkin' (originally a country song but more famous via Harry Nilsson's pop cover), Sunday morning coming down (written and first recorded by Kris Kristofferson but popularized by Johnny Cash) and Until it's time for you to go (written and first recorded by Buffy Sainte-Marie but popularized by Elvis Presley).
Traditional country music fans should also recognize the medley of Today I started loving you again / Crying time, though the first title occupies most of the time here, as well as Healing hands of time (a Willie Nelson song), Sweet memories (a Mickey Newbury song) and The tip of my finger (Bill Anderson - really, this is The tips of my fingers). The remaining songs are relatively obscure these days but I'm pleased that Vikki recorded them. They included A million years or so (a Roger Miller song), You are (a Mac Davis song), Make it rain, San Francisco is a lonely town, A dissatisfied man, Lincoln Street chapel, Empty words of love, Just for you and It's a small thing.
Many pop, rock and jazz singers have dabbled in country music with varying degrees of success. Artistically, these albums from Vikki are a complete success, whether or not they were commercially successful. This twofer is one that all of Vikki's fans will enjoy, but it might also please a lot of country music fans too.
