My first introduction to the guitar solos of Villa-Lobos were Segovia's recordings. Those soulfully articulated, iconically Segovian performances inspired me to seek out the sheet music for the pieces, especially the 5 Preludes. Like other reviewers of this disk, I sought an aural reference for the sheet; mixing the "business" of practicing with the pleasure of listening was also a desired outcome. I don't know what state of mind i could have possibly been in when I first listened to this record, but the interpretations didn't appeal to me right away. Especially the phrasing of "Choros No.1", which just bowled me over as being highly presumptuous. Also, being a great fan of Segovia, I was a little annoyed by the perfection of the playing; Kraft seemed soulless in comparison with the maestro. But don't load your pistols yet, reader, the field of honer has no need of my spilled blood. Over the weeks that I continued to listen, out of deference to the works themselves, my opinion changed by degrees. First, I found myself annoying my poor wife with inane discourse regarding the exceptionally beautiful tone of Kraft's instrument. It sounded so clear and resounded like a brass bell. Then I would marvel at the recording quality (that being, of course, no fault of Kraft's....tut tut tut...). Slowly, then rather quickly, my sensibilities defected over to the side of Norbert Kraft, as I began to have spasms of emotion at certain passages; the climactic, cunning and deceptively difficult final phrases of the Prelude No.1 would send icy aquiescence coursing through my veins. I would stop conversations of deep import with old friends long absent from my daily life to point out how powerful that passage was, and to pantomime the electric flow of emotions through my spine...So, obviously, I figured it out. My boss is mad at me now; buy this record and all other Kraft recordings from Naxos. He produces all of their guitar recordings (tut tut tut).
