Free Music Review: It's just not Christmas without Charlie Brown
Hit: 5 Stars

Christmas time is a time for nostalgia, looking back on happy days and the joys of simple pleasures. The frenetic pace of life these days can squeeze the fun out of what should be the happiest time of the year. When I feel that happening to me, I have a cure - play the Charlie Brown Christmas album. In fact, it's playing now in my office (it's OK, I'm eating lunch at my desk). From the opening notes of O Tannenbaum to the final strains of Christmas Song, it's all good. Yes, it's a brief album, but the whole TV special upon which it was based was only half an hour (with commercials)! After listening to these simple, pleasant songs, my mood is better, life seems simplier and my stress level drops several notches. You can't ask much more from one CD than that, can you?

I recommend getting the DVD and the CD - the TV special is exactly that - special. It's what Kid's TV should have been and seldom is - a show with a message without being "preachy." You'll also learn where the expression a "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree" came from.

Free Music Review: If I had to choose ONE...
Hit: 5 Stars

There is simply no other album which holds the same sentimentality for me that "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has. I was another child who grew up listening to mom's LP around Christmas time. She still has it - crackly as it sounds after suffering through years of our little hands.

This is an album which stays close at hand throughout the year for me. I'll let it repeat for a full day without tiring. Even the choir of children's rendition of "Hark! The Herald Angel's Sing!" has it's place. Sure, they aren't polished, but that's what makes it charming - it's a kids choir! ;)

This is one of those CD's I'm considering buying a backup for in case I wear mine out! Christmas or not, this is by far my favourite jazz album. It is SO relaxing.

Magical
Hit: 5 Stars There are very few Christmas albums I can stand listening to, and even fewer that I can enjoy, and this is one of the best. My love of this album was rekindled while attending university. Whenever first term exams were winding down and students were preparing to go for their holidays, this was always one of the albums that could be heard playing most frequently. Even the most jaded students fed up with false sentimentality and the commercialization of Christmas couldn't help but feel their hearts melt to this music. Although it is both filled with joy for the season and has a wonderful youthful spirit to it, it avoids becoming too saccharine and has a wonderul jazzy quality to it that can be appreciated by music fans. And Guaraldi is an absolute virtuoso on piano. You can just picture his fingers playing around on the keyboard. Although this album will bring back great childhood memories of Christmases past, it is one that can also be appreciated by adults on its own merits.

Free Music Review: It's Like a Time Machine!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Like all people who are fanatical about music, every point of my life can be summed up with certain songs. They certainly have the ability to transport one back to certain key moments in life (dancing with a certain girl, etc.). That said, the songs on this baby resonate in me more than ANY other music could do. When I hear the brushed drums and intro piano of "Christmas Time is Here," I am instantly 8 years old again, spending the day thinking of what Santa will bring me for Xmas. For us folks growing up in the 70's, watching the Charlie Brown Christmas Special each year was the ONLY time we could hear these tunes. Now being able to hear this music whenever I want has NOT diminished their impact a single iota. My 4 year old son is starting to watch this repeatedly, and I can only hope this music lives within him also. Here's to more warm and fuzzy feelings from these timeless classics, and at the end, please play this at my funeral, so matter what time of year:)

Free Music Review: How can you have Christmas without Charlie Brown!?
Hit: 5 Stars

If there ever was a must-have cd for the season, this is it. Vince Guaraldi and co. have put together the most enduring and nostalgia-evoking disc of all time here. Consider the following outstanding aspects of this time-honored release:

-the beauty of the brushes on the snare drum, punctuated by Vince's sparse piano notes at the beginning of "Christmas Time Is Here"

-the children's voices, which remind me a a simpler time, and my own Christmas singing as a child.

-the crispness of Vince's piano comping on "Skating", which almost makes you feel like you are outside on the ice, breathing in subzero air.

-the unparalleled beauty of the standards "O Tannenbaum", "What Child Is This?", and "Greensleeves".

The whole album just makes me want to curl up on the couch in front of the fireplace and Christmas tree with a hot chocolate. It's beautiful. My favorite holiday album of all-time.

Essential.
