Free Music Notes for Eternal Nightmare (Bonus CD)Free Music Review: Top-notch 80's hardcore thrash Hit: 4 Stars
Even though most kids know this band from having that dude from Machine Head in it, this is a very good but not earth-shattering Double CD. Lotsa shout choruses and breakdowns, but the energy is there and these guys had what it took to become a presence on the national metal scene. Ugly and hard as hell and worth the money.
Free Music Review: Not Really a Classic Album, but Good Nonetheless Hit: 3 Stars
Ok, so claiming that Vio-lence was much better than Machine Head may be an almost foolproof way of feigning metal credibility, but truth be told, while the former was at best a second tier Bay Area thrash latecomer band with a substandard vocalist, the latter rose as one of the leaders in the 90s groove metal movement, leaving a legacy of four good metal albums, despite a couple of nu-metallish missteps midway through its career. So basically, I'll go out on a limb and throw my metal credibility out the window and congratulate Rob Flynn for ditching this unmemorable band and giving us metalheads an undeniable heavy metal classic to latch on to with Burn my Eyes at the same time grunge was happily wiping the floor with our beloved genre and most of my high school pals were trading their leather jackets and patches for flannel and hiding their Maiden vinyls under the bed along their porn stashes.
Vio-lence songs may lack Forbidden's technical expertise or Death Angel's imaginative arrangements and amazing lead work, but that's not really a sin because there's plenty of good, workmanlike thrash contained in this album. The band's main problem was always Sean Killian: his shrill voice and poor enunciation can become tiresome very fast and ultimately hinder the material's enjoyment. Included in this edition is a 12-song live disk. Strangely enough, on a live setting Sean Killian's voice doesn't sound so grating, so I'll amend my original two star review to three.
To some thrash fans this album might be a classic, but in my opinion, what we got here is a pretty standard and somewhat flawed Bay Area thrash album. Pick it up if you enjoy the style and have a high tolerance towards annoying vocalists, otherwise pass.
