Free Music Review: Superb performances

Several years ago as I was driving I turned my radio on to our local classical music station and heard the finest performance of the Mendelssohn violin concerto I had heard to that time. When I got to my destination I sat in the car with the radio on for I had to know what violinist was giving this superb performance. It was Frank Peter Zimmermann, a violinist I had not heard of at that time. Needless to say, when I found this recording (then at full price) I bought it and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. I also bought several other fine recordings by Zimmermann. Since then I have encountered many fine performances of the Mendelssohn violin concerto but only one on a par with Zimmermann's, that by Gil Shaham (which is coupled with a sublime performance of the Bruch Concerto No. 1). If you love the violin and haven't yet heard Frank Peter Zimmermann, please do yourself a favor and buy this outstanding -- and budget priced -- recording. The lovely early concerto by Mendelssohn is a welcome filler.
