Free Music Review: A pleasant album

EDIT: Over time, the album has grown tiring; the songs are too short, the riffs aren't all that creative, and there does seem to be a certain repetitive sound. A good album nonetheless, but not a 5-star one. I was new to VoA, and when the the album impressed me way beyond expectations, I probably overreacted :P. Original review below.
I hadn't heard any Visions of Atlantis music before I was recommended this album by a friend, and after my first listen all I can say is: I have absolutely no idea why. The album is 50 minutes of completely awesome music.
I started off with more of a hard rock / thrash metal / heavy metal musical taste, and I consider myself one of the people who believe that Metallica sold out when they took away the solos and made more mainstream albums like Load and Reload. When I discovered gothic, and specifically, female-fronted melodic metal, I did not expect there to be solos: the genre had other selling points (I mean, even Evanescence goes multi-platinum after all...). So, although I love the pleasant music of Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Epica, etc., I probably subconsciously felt that there was something missing.
VoA showed me that you can have beautiful melodies sung by Melissa Ferlaak, pleasing musical composition, excellent keyboards, AND amazing (albeit a little short) guitar solos/riffs, all in the same 4-5 minute song. The best part is that, VoA, unlike many bands, manages to blend all the elements into one cohesive package. Yeah, for *every* song.
So, without going into painstaking detail by reviewing every song, I'll leave you with this: if you have even remotely considered listening to melodic, symphonic, female-fronted, or even gothic metal, get this CD. I assure you that you'll be back for more. I for sure am going to get all their earlier albums.
