Free Music Review: Gothic Metal "Lite"

This is my first introduction to Visions of Atlantis, so I can't make a comparison to past releases. My interest in listening to them was a result of noticing that they were touring with one of my favorite bands in the same genre. After repeated spins over a couple of weeks of listening I find the singing and musicianship good. However, there is definitely something not coming together on this disc. It feels as though the talent of these members is failing to connect with chemistry and passion. There is really nothing that stands out here. No growling to speak of - which is actually a good thing. My opinion - the singer doesn't fit. She may have a good voice, but it isn't mixing well with this musical style, or the type of songwriting - maybe even the production/arrangement.
When compared to other bands in the same genre (Nightwish, Epica, After Forever), this bands has nothing new/unique to offer, fails to meet the high standards the previous bands mentioned have achieved, and therefore VOA falls into mediocrity. If there weren't already bands of such outstanding musicianship and songwriting ability, VOA might be received more readily.
I would like to recommend this band, but just can't give my wholehearted endorsement, unless you're into a "lighter" version of the bands mentioned above.
