This budget-priced collection devoted to Wagner's lesser known orchestral works is a real treat for Wagnerites who want to explore the more obscure works of the German opera master. The Polonia and Rule Britannia overtures were early works from 1836. The Imperial March was a late work from 1871, written for the coronation of Kaiser Wilhelm I. The American Centennial March is from 1876, written when Wagner was working on Parsifal, his final opera.
I'm really not sure why these works get such bad press. The Kaisersmarsch was actually quite successful in its day, so it's really not fair to dismiss these works as "bad" music. The new listener should try to approach these works without any preconceived notions. If you're expecting anything like Tannhauser or Tristan here, you're going to be disappointed, so please don't look for it.
Personally, I found this CD to be quite enjoyable. I especially liked the early works: the Polonia Overture made me think of the popular Leonore overtures by Beethoven (under whom Wagner studied), and Rule Britannia was fittingly inspirational.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Varujan Kojian give rousing performances of each piece. I was especially impressed by the virtuosic string work. The engineered sound is rock solid, giving ample support to the considerable brass heroics which you would expect in music of this genre.
The biography of Wagner in the liner notes presents a darker portrayal of the composer than what one would expect in a CD. History and musical analyses of each work is also included.
Recorded in January 1983 in Hong Kong. This Naxos disc is a reissue of a recording originally released on the Marco Polo label.
