Free Music Review: Mostly wholly recommendable performances of all 10 mature operas at a bargain price
Hit: 4 Stars

Previous reviewers have provided detailed and helpful commentaries on the various merits and demerits of this bargain box set, so I'll give only a brief summary of how I see it - in case you haven't time to wade through the longer judgements.

For very little money, you get ten great operas in live, stereo sound. Some coughing but very few balance or audibility problems. The main virues of Bohm's "Ring" are obviously Nilsson in her prime, a tremendous James King as Siegmund and many Bayreuth stalwarts. Bohm's urgent conducting generates Solti-like excitement but misses some tenderness. I was surprised to find Adam's Wotan more adequate than I had feared, although he's no George London or Hans Hotter. The "Tristan" is often adjudged the best yet: it's still my favourite despite Windgassen's bleatiness of tone. The "Dutchman" is very fine, ditto the "Tannhauser" and the "Lohengrin" again one of the very best on the market. (I have reviewed the latter two separately under their individual titles.) The weaknesses are Levine's agonisingly etiolated tempi in the "Parsifal", with Hofmann as the eponymous hero much grittier than he was with Karajan, and a "Meistersinger" let down by an anonymous Eva and a hopelessly ugly-voiced Walter in Jean Cox - but Ridderbusch is good, despite tiring a bit towards the end. The conducting and supporting cast are very satisfactory.

So there you are: nearly every performance here provides much pleasure as a document of the great Bayreuth tradition - but you'll need another "Parsifal" and a "Meistersinger"; I would suggest Kubelik's in both cases (see my reviews).

Free Music Review: Great Bargain for Complete Wagner Set
Hit: 4 Stars

Although there is some uneveness in recording quality, overall this set is definitely worth the money. The Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin, and Tristan are all outstanding, and the Ring and Parsifal are solid. Tannhauser is the only real weak spot -- it is very poorly recorded. Great performances from a bygone era at a low price.

Free Music Review: Except for Parsifal
Hit: 4 Stars

Great set, but why Levine's Parsifal. It's so out of place here. If Knappertbusches was included it would get 5 stars. Please Polygram, get levine out and Knapper in.
