Free Music Review: THE GREATEST RECORDING OF TRISTAN UND ISOLDE!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm sure this recording of Tristan will never be surpassed. The voice of Kirsten Flagstad is perfect for this role she sang a few hundred times at the Met. She is powerful, delicate and sensuous all through the opera. Her rounded tone is unique, her refinement in phrasing is amazing! Suthaus is a very good Tristan, second only to Max Lorenz. There's no need to say that Furtw?ngler conducting is absolutely astonishing in Wagner.
My second favorite recording of Tristan is the live one conducted by B?hm in Bayreuth, with Nilsson, Windgassen an Ludwig.

Excellent performance. I do not like how the sound is recorded for these DVDs as when the music is soft I cannot hear it, but I can hear it when it is normal singing.

Free Music Review: My favourite trisolde
Hit: 5 Stars

In ranking the finest Trisoldes on record, the critic Alan Blythe ranked this number two behind Kna's 1950 bayreuth performance(which is about as intense and dramatic as can be). As good as that version is(the sound is horrid) I find this not only the greatest on record, but one of the greatest recordings ever. Period. Its funny how, for once, Furtwangler intelligently took a back seat to Flagstad and Suthaus, He knew he was in the midst of something transcendent and that, unlike Kleiber, he would allow the singers to be at the forefront. Furtwangler manages an inspired, almost perfect reading of the score, at times tender and supportive, but also vicious, passionate, and violent when need be. I have never been so moved in this opera that with this performance. This is about as definitive as music can be. No Wagner collection can be considered complete without this. The sound is also fine, even though it is over fifty years old. It is that warm luscios analog sound which is so much more feeling than today dry digital.

Free Music Review: A Must Have for a Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

This recording should be in every collection. This historical recording is the strongest studio recording of the opera. The cast cannot be duplicated. My only problem with this edition is that the sonics are weak compared to the Toshiba edition which was only available in Japan. The difference in the sound is like night and day. Unfortunately, at this point it impossible to get that version. Whatever licensing agreement EMI had with Toshiba has expired. But my reservation should deter anyone from this incredible performance.

I'm only ticked off that EMI doesn't take the care in the selection of a master to restore and why did Toshiba end up with the better source. This is one of the greatest recordings ever made. I would think that EMI had a better sense of pride in their history.

Free Music Review: Frustration in action
Hit: 1 Stars

Tristan and Isolde look like MEDICARE RECIPIENTS, absolutely incompatible with the romantic profile of the characters. Isolde's attire looks like a hospital gown. Very depressing!!
Sorry, but let sincerity prevail.
