Free Music Notes for Wake the SleeperFree Music Review: Excellent rock CD Hit: 5 Stars
Uriah Heep has put out an album that's every bit as good in the post-1980 classic rock mold as their best albums of the 70s were for that decade. (I'll note here that although most 70's bands seemed to update their style for the 80's, Heep and their contemporaries didn't seem to go into the grunge/alternative sound that's been mainstream since the early 90s, although). While not quite metal (I'd say they've been more hard rock than metal since their third album in 1971 anyway), there's plenty of rockin' goin' on and at times I think a little tweaking in the studio (like crankin' the guitar and taking down the vocals) might put this album nicely into the classic metal category - but compared to some of the crazy metal these days, much of what would be classified as "metal" in the 70s and 80s has become "rock". And, I'd hardly classify them as "progressive rock", either - but as far as rock music, this is still very musical. There's plenty of fine guitar and hammond organ in here (although the vocals are definitely more up front) as well as excellent singing by singer, Bernie Shaw, on his fifth studio album with Heep. In fact, this lineup has been the same for about half the band's career, except for the recent replacement of long-time drummer Lee Kerslake (the new boy does an excellent job, I might add).
There's some great riffs and musicianship, as well as thoughtful and socially conscious lyrics. A mature work in the sense of intelligent, thoughtful, and sophisticated, but not in the sense of tired or boring - these guys still rock more than any young band on the radio today I know of! (And this might be their most rocking album since 1971, too!).
I imported this last spring before it's American release, and I've listened to it quite a lot since then. As yet, I still appreciate it more with each listen!
Free Music Review: So this is where rock and roll went Hit: 5 Stars
You know, I have wondered if anybody could produce some high class, high energy good old rock music anymore. Being over 50, I remember these bands from when they came out. With what we have to put up with today (except for a few songs and they are few and far between), I can't understand why doing straight forward rock is so hard. The bands of today are what I call the post grunge, whiney little snots bands who know nothing about composition, arranging or even being interesting. Dull, dull, dull. THANK GOD FOR URIAH HEEP. Look at these guys, doing the best rock that was released in 2008 and see how old they are. I am a die hard fan of early UH and agree that some of their later projects lacked what the earliest did, especially with the likes of The Wizard, Easy Living, Stealing and the incredible Circle of Hands. I took a chance that the reviewers here on Amazon were honestly impressed and I am glad I did. This project rocks just like the early material. I am listening to it as I write this and can say there isn't a track that I don't like. This CD is the real thing. I could have been produced in the early 70's and would have gotten lots of radio play. If you are looking for some of that "new" old heavy rock, buy this disk. I don't give praise lightly and don't for a moment think this is a revival band that can't cut the mustard anymore. IT ROCKS. Should be a lesson to all the young puppies out there who think they can rock.
Free Music Review: A classic! One of my favorite albums ever! Hit: 5 Stars
Wake the Sleeper was my first exposure to Uriah Heep, other than hearing "Stealin'" and "Easy Livin'" on a cassette compilation years ago, and briefly owning a copy of Demons and Wizards when I was too young to really appreciate it.
I am a massive classic hard rock and metal fan. My collection includes complete discographies of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc. Out of over a thousand albums in my collection, Wake the Sleeper has gone straight to the top ten of my favorite albums ever! If you have any doubt about picking up this album...get it! It's really that good. It has the energy and epic feel of metal, with the class and honesty of the finest British rock, and fine, fine musicianship and vocals across the whole album.
As a side note to long time Heep fans, I went out and bought almost every Heep album after listening to Wake the Sleeper. Having no emotional attachment to any lineup of the band in particular, I would say that Bernie Shaw is easily the best Heep vocalist. He may not have quite the high range of David Byron, but Shaw's character of voice and delivery are, in my opinion, of a higher caliber.
Free Music Review: Uriah Heep returns to classic sound even without Byron! Hit: 5 Stars
After getting the reunion dvd and celebration cd/dvd i had to get this.
Being a fan since I was a kid I can tell you this album is back to the
classic Uriah Heep sound. The songs are written in the style of demons
and wizards and other albums with Byron. Mick Box and Trevor Boulder
are still here but the other members are excellent. The singer has a
great voice and style that matches Byron & isn't a screamer he sings!
The keyboardist sounds like Hensley and the drummer has the beat of
Kerslake. It's an excellent band. The album would please any Heep fan
of any generation and I can tell you I will continue to support this
lineup. Like most Heep fans the original is the best but this is the
next best thing. Hope to see them this year on tour! Next album please
cause Hard Rock is dying and we need Uriah Heep!
Free Music Review: This is MARVELOUS! Hit: 5 Stars
Another short review from me here. Of course, there's no need to go into technicolor detail. What I think should be said about Wake The Sleeper is this; I've been a Heep fan since the early 70s. I've liked the vast majority of their stuff since then - maybe more out of a sense of loyalty than anything else. Over the years, though, I've gotten a little gunshy about buying new Uriah Heep releases - "They'll never sound as good as they did at Demons & Wizards, etc." is what I though. While Wake The Sleeper isn't the same Heep as Demons (to be fair, how could it be) the very first thought I had just a few seconds into this release was "Ahhhh. They're back!"
