Free Music Notes for Walk the LineFree Music Review: Satisfaction Guaranteed!! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, the movie reminded me of how much I used to enjoy the music of Johnny Cash. My dad played the electric bass in a band while I was growing up, and would practice to Johnny Cash songs, so they were a staple of my childhood. Over the years the songs have faded into shades of gray of my younger years. That is until Walk the Line came out. Not only did it remind me of my dad playing the bass, but also of how much I loved Cash's music. As a bonus, and what a bonus it was, Joaquin Phoenix was playing Johnny. What's not to like. That he had to learn to play guitar and learn 26 songs for the movie is unbeliveable. Both he and Reese Witherspoon did an outstanding job acting and doing the songs. The CD is wonderful, but I was disappointed that not all the songs in the movie weren't on the disc. Times a Wastin', Stripes ,and Hey Porter are just a few that could have been on it. Also, they could have left out the Waylon Jennings song. It sounded whinny and I don't think it advanced the movie at all. Maybe one day the powers that be will release another CD with all the songs that weren't on the Soundtrack. We can only hope. Congratulations to Reese on her Oscar, but Joaquin should have gotten one, too. After all, her June wouldn't have been as good without his John to play off of. Right?
Free Music Review: Cash, Carter And Burnett Hit: 5 Stars
I saw this brilliant movie yesterday and i've been thrilled with the perfomances of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. I honestly didn't think they would match the same level of classic Cash & Carter's work. Well, if they do, they have a debt with T-Bone Burnett, the producer and responsible for this accomplishment. Of course the actors gave their best performing classics like "Jackson" and "Ring Of Fire", but the arrangements made by Burnett make things easy for the newcomers on Cash's body of work (specially replacing the horn section on "Ring Of Fire" by two guitarrists). This soundtrack is gorgeous, especially for the new generation of Cash's fans, the people that heard American Recordins and wish to know where that amazing man with this amazing voice came from. Or what he was doing whe he was younger than when the cover of "Hurt" came on MTV.
Here in Brazil there's no space for country music and people doesn't know much about the Cash's relevance to 20th century's popular music. So, T-Bone (who gave us the amazing soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou), Joaquin, Reese, James Mangold and all the personnel, we are thankful. And, praise Johnny and June, that chose this two gifted actors (and singers). The only problem here is the bad job with the Jerry Lee's songs.
Free Music Review: Walk The Line is an excellent soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon capture the spirit of the music of Johnny and June Carter Cash so well. They sound like they are having so much fun singing together on duets like Jackson and It Aint Me Babe. They also shine when they sing songs individually. Joaquin sounds great on tracks like Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, I Walk The Line, and Cocaine Blues. These are classic songs about love, regret and rebellion, and I think Joaquin performs these songs like a pro. Reese shines on the track Jukebox Blues. It is a very upbeat song with an old fashioned country sound. I also enjoyed Reese's performance of Wildwood Flower. There is a sincerity in her voice that is just so appealing. Her guitar playing is very good on this track. There are performances by other singers who also have act in the movie. My favorites are Tyler Hilton's version of Elvis Presley's That's Alright Mama and Waylon Payne's version of Jerry Lee Lewis song Lewis Boogie Blues. I think they capture the energy and spirit of the singers they portray excellently. I did not have to compare the songs on this CD with the original artists, because I think the music on this soundtrack is enjoyable and entertaining enough.

Some reviews have said that they like Joaquin more than Johnny. I won't go that far... but I will say that this album is a great listen in it's own right. I just saw the movie last night and the soundtrack certainly brings it all back.
It's not easy to duplicate the intricacies of a sound created by a giant like Johnny Cash, but Joaquin and Reese do a fine job. (albeit with the help of many teachers and constant coaching I'm sure). All involved in the project deserve a round of applause.
I do recommend seeing the movie first. The soundtrack is as much about the title as is the content of the movie. "Walk The Line" in my mind not only refers to Johnny's recovery from drugs and alcohol abuse, but also well describes the fine line the actors had to walk to create this masterpiece soundtrack which is a real tribute to Johnny and June's legacy.
Let's also not forget Sun Records. Though a small label, they pumped out some of the biggest names this business has ever known. The movie/soundtrack is as much a tribute to their legacy as it is to Johnny's.
Ok, I'm done. Go buy it! Listen! Enjoy! :)
Free Music Review: a great movie -- with a great soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
I never listened to Johnny Cash all that much and the only songs of his I knew of were prior to seeing the movie were, "The Ring of Fire" and "I Walk The Line". The purpose of this movie was not just for the old fans, but to create new fans as well -- which they accomplished because they surely made one out of me! Considering that the only country I used to listen to was only modern country -- never the older stuff. Because of this movie, I have now come to appreciate it more.
I have listened to the orignal versions of these songs, and they are, of course, better than the versions on this soundtrack, but Phoenix and Witherspoon do an excellent job of singing their own modern remake of the songs. Although neither of there voices are as deep as Johnny Cash's and June Carter's. But of course, only seldom (if any) remakes are actually better than the original.
This soundtrack is of course not as good as the original versions of the songs, but it is worthy enough to be an addition to your Johnny Cash collection.
