Free Music Notes for Walk the LineFree Music Review: Amazing voices Hit: 5 Stars
I recieved a B.A. in Voice from the University of Washington in 1999. What these two actors have done vocally is simply amazing. They went from having no previous vocal experience to getting vocal coaches, learning to play instruments, performing the songs on screen and recording. As a singer, it's difficult to sing these songs and I am impressed with the level of control that both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon display on this album.
Surely watching them lip-sync to the original singers (Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash) wouldn't have been as believable. Johnny Cash has one of the most recognizable voices ever. Hearing Joaquin's voice influenced by Johnny Cash is awesome! I recommend both the album and the movie.

I'll start by echoing quite a bit of what I've read so far on other reviews. I do love the June & Johnny original recordings...I've built quite the collection over the past 10 years or so. I just saw the movie last night, put it off for a while because I was afraid I'd be disappointed. Definitely NOT the case. I was most impressed by Joaquin's & Reese's renditions of these songs. Several artists have done Cash covers & most of them I like just as much as the originals - not AS the originals, but as covers. Just take Social Distortion for example - NOTHING like Cash, but a great version of an old favorite. This soundtrack will be my next purchase, not in place of Cash/Carter originals, but as yet another tribute/compilation cd.

Disclaimer...
I heard the soundtrack while watching the move. I don't own this disk YET. What I HAVE to say is this: The movie treated Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash with so much love, respect and honesty as well as passing along the offer of redemption that Johnny experienced.. that I really don't care if they didn't REALLY sound like Johnny or June. This soundtrack deserves to be bought just because of that. I'm ordering my copy next payday.
They weren't perfect, they were human. And this movie helped me remember 2 unique musicians. In the movie, June says to Johnny, "God's given you a second chance.. what are you going to do with it?"... That really touched me.
Free Music Review: Wow. Reese, WOW! Hit: 5 Stars
Short and sweet - this is a good soundtrack. All the performers are great on this soundtrack. If you are expecting duplication of the original performers then buy some other album. How ever if you appreciate excellent performances that capture the heart and soul of the performers, then this is an album for you. Especially Mr. Phoenix's and Ms. Reese's performances. But I have to say the Reese Witherspoon blew my socks off. Her performance in the movie and seperately in the soundtrack. Not just because she captured the power of June Carter but because she is a great singer herself. If Reese Witherspoon doesn't make an album of her own then she doesn't understand how good she really is!
Free Music Review: Get rhythm with this CD! Hit: 5 Stars
Great album with an amazing Joaquin Phoenix who really sings exactly like the man in black. I know now why Johnny Cash himself chose Phoenix to portray him.
Reese Witherspoon tries too hard to imitate June Carter and it sounds a bit forced. The same goes for Tyler Hilton who tries to act and sing like the King. His version of THAT's ALL RIGHT is quite good but he does a real mess of the masterpiece MILK COW BLUES.
The new versions of Johnny Cash's hits sound really great and some of them (like I WALK THE LINE) are a little bit extended to let the musicians go on with the music.
I have to say, even if it may sound funny, that it's for me the best album of the year.
