Free Music Notes for Rebel SweetheartFree Music Review: Excellent Record Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this cd back in August 05, and I'm still listening to it now, in the February 06. I'll admit that my first play through the cd didn't impress me, but it did make me want to listen to it again, and then again after that, and then again...
This cd will not be leaving my cd player for a very long time. It is very subtle, but the songs are infectious, and the variety and depth of the lyrics keeps them fresh and interesting for many repeated listens.
Wallflowers music definately takes work to appreciate; these are not mindless lyrics with throw-away guitar riffs. But for the contemplative listener, it might just be the best music out there.
Favourite tracks:
Confessions of a Drunken Marionette, We're Already There, God says nothing back, All Things New Again.
Free Music Review: Jakob Dylan's Voice is Better Than Chocolate Hit: 5 Stars
This was my first Wallflowers CD. I love Bob Dylan, and when I found out his son was in this band, I thought I'd give it a shot. I intended to buy Red Letter Days when I went to the store, but ended up buying Rebel, Sweetheart instead. I'm glad I did. It's my favorite album. It's one of those great CDs where you don't have to skip over any of the tracks, because they're all so good. My personal favorite is "God Says Nothing Back," but it certainly runs a close race with all the other songs. If you get the chance, buy the dual-disc version. You get to see the band play their classic, "One Headlight" and a song that never ended up an album, "Halo," among others. Jakob and the other band members meld really well, both as vocalists and instrumentalists. Now go buy this CD.
Free Music Review: Great Album...again Hit: 5 Stars
I have been into the Wallflowers since 6th Avenue Heartache on and have never genuinely been disappointed by any of their records. This isn't something I can say about many guitar bands of the past 10 years, most of whom have had their ups and downs.
While the sound of this isn't much different from any other Wallflowers record, this is a stronger album song for song than its predecessor, Red Letter Days but what makes it possibly their best yet is the production (it's detailed but not cluttered) and Jakob Dylan's lyrics, which are full of some great imagery and real emotion. It is a shame there seems to be little place on the radio for a classy straight ahead rock n roll band in 2005, but don't let that stop you buying and enjoying this album!
Free Music Review: Don't look now, but the Wallflowers are back! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm currently listening to this album the third time through. It's better every single time. I thought the Beautiful Side of Somewhere was a great single--Here He Comes (Confessions) is the better of the two. It's a richer sound than either Bringing Down the Horse or (Breach), which I consider their two best. By richer I mean the instrumentals are more complicated, powerful, and baroque, and Jakob's voice is more lyrical than on any of the four previous records. For this reason alone it's a beautiful listen, and worth the purchase price. But what really make this album are the lyrics--not necessarily better, but more complex, than anything Dylan has accomplished before. After the disappointment of Red Letter Days, I am thoroughly impressed.
Free Music Review: Growing, Growing, Not Gone! Hit: 5 Stars
The Wallflowers are a delight to listen to. If ever a dull moment manifests itself into your life, insert "Rebel, Sweetheart" into the nearest CD player and be prepared for a carnival of sounds. This is was songwriting is about. "You'd have a wonderful day if you could see how lucky you are. Don't get carried away with your heart. You're better where you are." After the less than stellar response "Red Letter Days" received, I feared The Wallflowers days as radio busters were numbered. And although they still may be, at least the music loving public has been blessed with one more outing by Dylan Jr. and his alliance of bandmates, together known as The Wallflowers.
