Free Music Review: A Piece of Chicano Culture...

Funk, Oldies but Goodies, of course Latin Rhythms are all blended together to make a band that has been and will remain a staple in the Chicano commnity...WAR. I can remember that WAR was one of my first musical influences. I play a lot of their music today as they haven't faded a bit in popularity. Great classics like The Cisco Kid, Slippin into darkness, and Spill the wine are classics and have been handed down from one generation to the next. A lot of the younger generation may credit the George Lopez show for regenerating interest in the song "LOWRIDER" but that's not really true...as a Dj i know that if you're at a good party that means that you're gonna hear some WAR. Other noteables on this album are obvious...All day music, Summer, Me and Baby brother with "Why can't we be friends" being one of their signature hits...the two exceptions on this album that truly belong are "Don't let no one get you down" & "the World is a ghetto"...classic chicano oldies...in all fairness i have to say that WAR IS (ESPECIALLY IN TODAY'S WORLD)has to a certain extent been excepted by the masses...this is not thier best album but the group itself is timeless

War peppers their music with Latin rhythms and instrumentations, mixing in elements of funk with oldies rock & roll to create a nonstop summer-block-party sound. Hits like "The Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?" are characterized by the band's lower-register vocals and beg for a singalong. "Spill the Wine, " a hit during Eric Burden's tenure with War, lacks the freer, good-time feel of the later material, but "Low Rider, " a bottom-heavy salsa driven by a raunchy harmonica, remains one of the band's most popular songs.
