Free Music Review: A brilliant comeback album
Hit: 5 Stars

Sentimental Hygiene was Warren Zevon's mid-80s comeback album. After the commerical failure of his (excellent but still out of print album) "the Envoy" in 1982, Zevon lost his recording contract and spent nearly half a decade as a journeyman musician, working in small clubs as an acoustic artist and as a session musician with the likes of R.E.M. The sabbatical paid off, however, because when he signed with Virgin in the mid 80s he released this, one of the best albums of his career. Boasting backing from R.E.M., as well as such luminaries as Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Brian Setzer, "Sentimental Hygiene" displayed musicial muscle to go with Zevon's always sardonic lyrics. Standout tracks include "Boom Boom Mancini," a driving rocker about the disgraced boxer, the Springsteeneque "Factory," an indictment of Hollywood phonies with "Even a Dog Can Shake Hands," and the semi-autobiographical "Detox Mansion," which features chiming guitars over the tale of a rock star drying out with Liz and Liza on the Farm. Simply put, this is not merely one of Zevon's best, its one of the best of the 1980s.

Free Music Review: Warren Zevon Gets Sober For The Second Time, And Comes Back Swinging With A New Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Around 1980, Warren Zevon had gotten clean and sober following a bout with alcoholism, resulting in three great albums- BAD LUCK STREAK IN DANCING SCHOOL, the live STAND IN THE FIRE, and THE ENVOY, after which, following the use of wine for a ritual purpose (he was Jewish), he fell off the wagon again and was not heard from for five years. By 1987, he'd regained his sobriety, and came back swinging with SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE, arguably his best since STAND IN THE FIRE. Although he still has a wicked sense of humor ("Detox Mansion" satirizes the experience of being in rehab, whereas "Even A Dog Can Shake Hands" serves as a sarcastic warning for me that staying away from toxic people will help me look good for several pretty actresses), it's tempered by thoughtful examinations of what he learned while getting sober, which make this CD, with its remastered sound, cut deeper emotionally than some of his early work. This album is essential listening for anyone struggling with ANY type of addiction; in fact, even a horse-lover who compulsively gambles every last penny at the races can learn from this CD.

Free Music Review: Wailin' Warren
Hit: 5 Stars

Always been a big fan of WZ - though only owing "Greatest Hits", and his first release from 1978 - on vinyl. A few weeks back I heard the title track - "Sentimental Hygiene" on satellite. Rockin' song, with this blistering guitar solo. Turns out it's none other than Neil Young smokin' the guit box. And whole album is great. No "filler". Plenty of rockin' tunes, and soulful ballads.

The big surprise is that this album was recorded in 1987. Supposed to be his "comeback" album. Besides Neil Young; Don Henley, Brian Setzer, and Bob Dylan; plus a slew of other known musicians, also contribute. I'd never heard of this album, or any of it's songs. WOW - what a treat to find this little gem.

With Warren gone - tragic loss - there obviously hasn't been any new WZ music for quite a while. If you are a casual fan, but maybe looking for some "new" WZ - this album is a must. This album smokes......but has some nice cool ballads.

Don't miss it.

Free Music Review: modern society: so technological
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is so astute in reflecting the kind of changes that people are expected to adjust to that it took me many years to realize that Warren Zevon was telling me things better than anyone else could. I did not think the music was what made me like songs like "Trouble Waiting to Happen," but the music is good enough to make me feel like I woke up this morning and I fell out of bed if anyone asks about me. It takes talent to get things stuck in my mind like Sentimental Hygiene, which was not a way that people I knew thought about relationships. When I was going to church in Minneapolis, bringing up Sentimental Hygiene's line about driving up and down the boulevard was something which made people think I was crazier than they were. It took a shrink to convince me that, sure enough, sentimental hygiene was a major reason those people wanted me to get fixed.

Free Music Review: My Favorite WZ Studio Album
Hit: 5 Stars

In my opinion, this is Warren's best studio album (my favorite album is "Stand in the Fire".) (I AM a rabid Zevon Fan.) Every song on this record is strong. There's variety; but all rock. I really like the wit of the lyrics (I DO like detox mansion! "I was rakin' leaves with Liza ... Now I'm doin' my own laundry and I'm GETING THOSE CLOTHES CLEAN!") I was so pleased with this comeback album. It was his high-water mark and he never again approached it, though I like "Transverse City," "Mt Ride's Here," and "Life'll Kill Ya." The only of his other albums that I compare with this one is Excitable Boy.

Great rocking record. Enjoy.
