Free Music Review: The Flames Did Rise When Zevon Performed Live
Hit: 5 Stars

After the stunning success of Frampton Comes Alive!, the music industry flooded the marketplace with live sets in obvious hopes to recapture that lightning in a jar.

At the apex, such releases like Stand in the Fire captured the unbridled energy of a true artist like Warren Zevon, who was as comfortable stretching his power as a storyteller on stage as he was crafting classic arrangements in the studio.

This July 1981 release was not simply a jaunt over familiar turf; there are two new selections - the title cut and The Sin - and one new cover, Bo Diddley's a Gunslinger. And the CD includes four additional cuts - Johnny Strike Up The Band, Play It All Night Long, Frank and Jesse James & Hasten Down The Wind.

Not only capturing a moment in time, it shows an artist at the height of his commercial prowess, while dazzling audiences with a sizzling set of songs.

Free Music Review: Rocks Your Brains Out!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow, this is what rock and roll could be, should be, used to be*. These guys are tight and they rock out! Great renditions of Warren's great songs. Warren is singing out of his mind. Lots of fun lyric variations, just enough jamming, great backing band. Warren always did know how to choose and lead a great band. (* see also Lou Reed's Rock N Roll Animal!)

The extra four tracks (Johnny Strikes up the Band, Play It All Night Long, Frank and Jesse James, and Hasten Down the Wind) are from the same concert and are also great. The last two provide a denoument to the concert: they are calmer, WZ alone at the piano. The remastered sound is wonderful.

Explosively energetic. Wonderful. This is a must for any WZ fan. Sure makes me sad that he's: too soon gone.

Essential rock n roll. One of the best rock albums ever.

Free Music Review: A fine live album
Hit: 5 Stars

There were better rock 'n roll singer/songwriters than Warren Zevon. Or so I heard somebody say. I think they may have been wrong.

STAND IN THE FIRE captures the Warren-in-concert feel that his newer fans (such as myself) will, alas, never be able to experience for ourselves. This is an album of great rock 'n roll--from the satirical "Excitable Boy," to the deliciously perverse romp of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," to rollickin' surprise of "Bo Diddley's a Gunslinger," to the exquisite piano/vocal performance of "Hasten Down the Wind." From the very first note the very last, this album (like most of Zevon's records) will captivate you. Older fans will delight in hearing this treasure on CD; newer fans such as myself with simply delight in hearing it at all.

Free Music Review: Live and Raw Zevon
Hit: 5 Stars

I got this in college and had been looking for years for this disc. Once I got it in my hands and put it in the disc player it was like being reunited with an old friend.

I saw Warren twice in acoustic shows, but never got the chance to see him with a full band. This is a great live recording; raw, electric and alive with a unique vitality. Warren takes the energy of the audience and channels it into a vivid preformance. He was one of the most honest rock n roll artists ever. This disc is a must have. Incredible versions of "Lawyers, Guns and Money", "Excitable Boy" among others. Nothing weak on this album. Your collection is not complete until you add this disc.

Free Music Review: To paraphrase the late great Zevon himself.
Hit: 5 Stars

"Lawyers, Guns and Money," play that dead man's songs. Turn those speakers up full blast, play it all night long.

That is all ye know on Earth and all ye need to know on Earth.

P.S. This album brings back a lot of memories of riding in my best friend's Aspen 1994-1995. For two punk kids who abhorred James Taylor, Warren's lyric change on "Werewolves of London" developed many a Pavlovia reaction from us when he'd get to that line. I'm really glad it came out on CD finally as it's next to impossible to find on cassette anymore. There won't be another like Zevon. There never is.
