Free Music Notes for The WindFree Music Review: I put off buying this CD because I knew it would hurt ...... Hit: 5 Stars
Life is short and I admire Warren Zevon for even attempting to make this CD in the condition he was in. I am not too sure that many people would have been able to do it. I agree that this is not Warren's best but you have to look a bit deeper to actually "get it". This was a brillant man who said things in his songs that made u you think and smile. This CD is another one of those "make you think" CD's. Once in my life I was going through one of those depression from hell states and took up walking and with a CD player and head phones. I would literally walk with tears streaming down my face while listening to music, trying to beat the demons inside me. I listened to Warren Zevon and the lyrics to his songs which usually made me see how ridiclous and silly people are in this world and it would make me smile and cry. Some people are given a gift to help others others open up their mind and see things in a different light. Mr Zevon was one of those. I guess all the great beings in this world have had that same quality if you really think about it. Warren used the gifts God gave him. And I think the man upstairs enjoyed Warren's lyrics because it told the truth about this crazy world us humans have made. Don't you just know God's having a fun time with Warren Zevon right now? Let's just remember to keep Warren in our hearts for awhile.
Free Music Review: Warren leaves us with some of his best!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I am a HUGE Warren fan, having grown up listening to his music way back in the 70's right thru to now. What drives me nuts, is the vast catalouge of music Warren leaves behind that so many people havent heard.TOO many unfortunate humans out there that havent heard of this man.He was a genius with words. And wrote catchy, emotional,(dare i say-political),angry,humorous,thoughtful....what else?,songs. Warren said it all. His version on his latest(and sadly his last) CD of Dylans "Knockin On Heavens Door" sounds like he wrote it.So stirring condidering the circumstances under which it was recorded. It will make you cry.The last song on the CD "Keep Me In Your Heart" will do the same. The CD will make you bounce around the house,or sit and reflect.Great stuff from a man and his music that i know i will sorely miss.Just ask my wife about the tears i wept when he died!!.Oh i knew it was coming, but why "Warren" after all he has been thru? The backing of all his friends(Jackson,Bruce,D.Lindley,Ry Cooder,Petty etc.)only make this one hell of an CD.PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy this CD.You won't be sorry. And if you are new to Warren.Look into "Genius" Best of.A great place to find out what he was all about.Don't like saying"was" but he is gone now,and will be missed.
Free Music Review: A sad, beautiful and touching coda Hit: 5 Stars
After having seen the VH1 special on the making of this album I thought I already had a good idea what to expect. What I didn't expect was the immediacy and heartbreaking fraily of some of the vocals, and his begrudging acceptance that he was most certainly recording his last album. The ironic title "Wind" is even more poignant as you hear Warren losing his. Having been a piano bar entertainer for 25 years I have always loved playing Warren's music - especially for customers who were unfamiliar with his brilliant biting lyrics and piano lines that alternated between delicate and hard rocking. Like Randy Newman and Tom Waits, Warren always had an interesting (if sometimes dark) point of view, and a unique way of telling it to you. If there's a chance that Warren is still well enough to check out his reviews on Amazon.com, I'm sure he'll get a kick to see that it's currently ranked number one in sales. It's a shame that the public didn't appreciate him more when he was well enough to truly enjoy it. Warren, thanks for all the great tunes and may your passage into whatever comes next be peaceful and ushered in with all your loved ones by your side, and by millions of fans all over the world. We'll really miss you. "Love - you can't start it like a car, you can't stop it with a gun."
Free Music Review: Dead Man Singing Hit: 5 Stars
What a swan song! Too bad the hand of Fate has seen to end this life abruptly. Nonetheless, Warren Zevon's legacy remains and The Wind, his final gift to his fans and to rock and roll, ranks up there among his best. Rather than dwell on the morbid, this is a CD mixed with rockers, sentimental journeys and reflections on his life. "Dirty Life and Times," the opening track, sums up his 56 years. "Disorder in the House" is a full-tilt rocker with pal Bruce Springsteen performing searing guitar licks and penetrating vocals. Zevon then offers a modest cover of Bob Dylan's classic, "Knockin' On Heaven's Door." As the song ends, Zevon demandss, "Open up, open up!" Other outstanding tracks include "El Amor Di Vida," in which he regrets a lost love. Some other guest performers include Tom Petty, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Ry Cooder. The CD closer, "Keep Me In Your Heart for A While," was reportedly written after he received his terminal diagnosis. While he could be talking to friends and family, he's also modestly asking listeners to remember him for a time, but not forever. Forget it, we will remember Warren Zevon for this send off and a repertoire of many witty, great songs.
Free Music Review: Hasten down the Wind Hit: 5 Stars
I've been crying and laughing, laughing and crying for the last hour or so. Warren's VH1 special just went off. I know of no other public figure who could or would grant his fans/customers such intimate access to his life during a time like this. Nor can I think of anyone else who could face his fate with such bravery and graceful acceptance. Now I'm listening to "The Wind". Knowing the circumstances behind the album's conception makes it an emotionally tumultuous listen. But one doesn't need to be familiar with the backstory to appreciate Warren's swan song. Introspective, intimate, personal, mournful, moving, beautiful, melodic, raucous, raw, irreverent, courageous...it's all in this final masterpiece, the album of a lifetime. You'll hear a man saying goodbye to those he loves and cares about, and maybe even to us. What you won't hear is a man feeling sorry for himself. Pride, ego, call it what you will...Warren is too tough for that. Mr. Zevon will leave behind an unequalled legacy of left field anthems and smiles on the faces of all who were lucky enough to hear them. "The Wind" is not only a worthy addition to his canon of musical brilliance, it is a necessary one. Thank you for sharing with us, Warren, and God bless you.
