Free Music Notes for Watchmen: Music from the Motion Picture

Free Music Review: Good, but a few flaws
Hit: 4 Stars

While many of the pieces here are well chosen, there are a few musical choices that didn't mesh as well as the others. Some stand out brilliantly such as "The Times They Are A'changin" & "Pruit Igoe & Prophecies", but others such as "Demolition Row" & "Hallelujah" just stick out like sore thumbs.

To some, the collection of songs may seem disjointed & be angry that certain pieces from the film were left out. HOWEVER, most of the songs were directly referenced in the comic chapter titles (such as "All Along the Watchtower") & others were in the comic but not used in the movie, such as "You're My Thrill". While it doesn't make for the most linear listening experience, the album is pretty complete for the most part.

That brings me to the ones that just didn't do it for me. "Hallelujah" is one of them, with the song just sounding incredibly ridiculous & not really that much fun to listen to. The other one is a song that I like, but didn't really fit with the rest of the soundtrack: "Desolation Row". MCR are sell-outs, but they are entertaining ones. The only problem is that their remake lacks the soul of the original Bob Dylan song & seems to be the obligatory rock remake that every "oldies" soundtrack seems to have tacked onto it. Perhaps the original would have been better added, or another song would have been better to remake.

Overall this soundtrack isn't bad. I'm hoping that the rumors of a director's cut will be true, which means that some of the unused soundtrack tracks (including the ones on the orchestral soundtrack) will be present if the cut scenes are included on the director's cut dvd.

Free Music Review: Great Music, But It's Not a Complete Soundtrack.
Hit: 4 Stars

I enjoyed the soundtrack to WATCHMEN. I thought the songs in the film were almost perfect for the scenes they accompanied. Taken away from the movie, the songs on the soundtrack seem like a mumble-jumble, very hetic mess of music. There are several different styles of music from several different eras. It's a very wide range. However, even outside the context of the movie, most of the songs are excellent on their own. I especially liked "The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Bob Dylan. This song is the song used underneath the opening montage of the film. I had never heard the song before and thought it was perfect for that montage. Other songs on the album I enjoy include:

"Desolation Row"--My Chemical Romance

"Unforgettable"--Nat King Cole

"Pruit Igoe & Prophecies"--The Philip Glass Ensemble

"Hallelujah"--Leonard Cohen

"All Along the Watchtower"--Jimi Hendrix

Despite the great music on the album, the WATCHMEN SOUNDTRACK is not a complete soundtrack. There are at least two glaring omissions: "99 Luftballoons" by Nena and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Muzak. A soundtrack is supposed to include all of the non-instrumental music from a movie. These are two songs (and I believe there was probably one or two) really strengthened the scenes they supported and should have been included on the soundtrack.

Overall, I enjoy this soundtrack, but am disappointed that it isn't a complete soundtrack. I'd give this five stars for the music, but since it's not a complete soundtrack, I've got to deduct a star.

Free Music Review: Classic
Hit: 4 Stars

Really like this music, besides the score... which I also loved, I really enjoyed the classic music through out the movie, again, its good to see included in this cd.

Free Music Review: Has its Ups and Downs, a Mixed Bag.
Hit: 3 Stars

Whether you liked the placement of the music in the movie or not you have to admit that it did use some great oldies. After viewing the film I could not get some of the songs out of my head so I picked up the soundtrack. For the most part it is pretty solid but it does have some duds as well.

Highs
*The Times They are A-Changin - This song was used beautifully in the film and it sounds just as good out of it.
*The Sound of Silence - My favorite song on the CD.
*All Along the Watchtower - It's Hendrix, there is not much to add here.

Most people already know these songs, so there is not much to say considering you probably already have an opinion on them. Now for the lows..

Lows
*Desolation Row - Not a big fan of MCR, I skip over it every time.
*Hallelujah - It just seems out of place and does not really mesh with the rest of the CD.
*You're My Thrill - Pretty much the same as above.

There are some other songs that I am not that fond of but these three are probably my least favorite. Overall the CD can be a mixed bag but I am overall pleased with my purchase.

Free Music Review: An eclectic mix
Hit: 3 Stars

Despite its flaws, Zack Snyder's adaptation of Watchmen was more than likely the most faithful take on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' classic that we'd ever be able to get, right down to the music. The Watchmen soundtrack is an eclectic mix, featuring everything from Nat King Cole to Leonard Cohen, and classic tracks from Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. There's nothing bad here, even though I'm not necessarily too fond of My Chemical Romance's cover of "Desolation Row", but there isn't anything you either don't already somehow have in your posession or haven't heard before. Not to mention that other tracks you may expect here, like "99 Luftbaloons" and the Smashing Pumpkins' "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning" (which was featured so prominently in the film's first trailer) are absent. Still, there's nothing necessarily wrong with the Watchmen soundtrack, but it's safe to say that this CD is best left for completists. For the rest of us, check out Tyler Bates' haunting score, which is definitely worth picking up.
