Free Music Review: Rock fans start with Wayne
Hit: 4 Stars

Jazz folks usually cite Davis' Kind of Blue as the most accessible studio snapshot for introductory jazz newbies who previously were only fans of rock music. Although i agree that the mentioned disc is one very integral step along the way, I think that Shorter's work is an easier initial stepping stone into the jazz abstract. Shorter was a master of melody and his compositional skills easily entice those that long for clear cut melodic definition in their music. If anyone is searching for a creative vantage point for 60's jazz, I would suggest starting here, with Wayne. This and the 'evil' disc are equally as good and without opinion, the best work he did outside of the apprenticeships he was previously known for. The cat studied with the best live schools available and his confidence is documented here with a Coltrane studio band. If you dig David Gilmour on guitar, Wayne Shorter is for you. If you are a Hendrix fan, Coltrane does the exploration thing the best. Why settle for one of them. Go for both.

Free Music Review: Shorter's first solo effort on Blue Note yields fruit
Hit: 4 Stars

I almost feel like giving this 5 stars but 4.5 ain't bad so that's what it's at. This was Wayne's first solo album without another horn player like Lee or Freddie and he still soars, the tunes in a way are more modally based and quite influenced by 'Trane but I think "Speak No Evil" is probably Wayne's coming out as a the most influential jazz composer since Thelonius Monk. Still it's great to hear him here as a solo horn and of course, the rhythm section is the same as on the previous effort, "Night Dreamer", basically the Coltrane trio of Tyner, Workman & Jones. So despite traces of Coltrane, you'll enjoy this album since Shorter also has a sense of humor as witnessed in "12 more bars to go" which closes this great album.

Free Music Review: 4 1/2 stars.
Hit: 4 Stars

when it comes to jazz from the 1960's, i have yet to happen upon a bum release from the blue note label. as usual, this is fantastic stuff from their great catalogue of music. mr shorter has a tenor saxophone conversation here with six of his own compositions, and it's a straight ahead jazz excursion, with no avant-garde shadings. just fantastic playing on six accessible, rich melodies. joining mr shorter on this album is the incredible line-up that graces so many john coltrane albums from this period: mccoy tyner (piano), reggie workman (bass), and elvin jones (drums). can't go wrong with that crew. and if you love jazz, you can't go wrong with this recording. excellent.

Free Music Review: Excellent sax & a rhythm section
Hit: 4 Stars

My first listen to the song "Juju" was a little disappointing, and I liked the tamer alternate version better. After a few more listens, I agreed with Wayne's decision to go with the more challenging version he went with. In general, the songs are fairly catchy (in contrast to some of the '65-68 Miles Davis stuff Wayne played on later), and Wayne's playing is superb. He does just a well on faster pieces like "Juju" as slower ones like "Deluge" or "House of Jade". I especially like "Yes or No".

Free Music Review: Better than Speak No Evil, this is Wayne's best
Hit: 4 Stars

This album pairs Wayne with Coltrane's early sixties rhythm section and it is uniformly excellent. Wayne's soloing is intelligent, interesting and superbly logical. Jones, Tyner and Workman are excellent, as always. Tyner is in especially good form and plays a number of fine solos. It is quite different than their playing with Trane. A lot less intense and lot more joyful.

The new re-master is pretty good but Wayne's sax sounds a little buzzy on some of the tracks. If you like Wayne then you should definitely get this.
