Free Music Notes for JujuFree Music Review: 5 stars if you the 1996 CD release Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great album. The compositions are all strong and the musicianship intense and of a very high caliber. I`ve had this CD since 1996 and I still listen to it regularly. Elvin Jones fans will find some of his best playing here. One caveat though, the Van Gelder remaster is a mess : Shorter`s sax has gained so much crispness that he sounds like he muted his sax with a box of KFC and the bass is now wobbly and muddled. Get the 1996 CD.
Free Music Review: the title track might throw you Hit: 4 Stars
This really is a great Shorter record, but sometimes I play this record for people and they just don't get the title track. It must be the augmented chords...if you want to check this out I might suggest saving the title track for last. Yes or No is a classic. Deluge and Mahjongg are beautiful. I'd put this second or third in the Shorter catalog (1 and 2 being Speak No Evil and Night Dreamer).
Free Music Review: Coltrane or Wayne? Hit: 4 Stars
"JuJu" is a great album, but I believe the use of Coltrane's rhythm section pigeonholes Wayne as a Coltane immitator, which he is not. If you love Wayne, invest in this album. If you're just starting to listen to him, I recommend "Speak No Evil" or even "The All Seeing Eye" for the more avante-garde listener.
Free Music Review: Not my favorite Hit: 3 Stars
I'm pretty new to jazz, so I try to write these reviews for the uninitiated versus the enthusiast. My thought being, if you know jazz, then you don't need me or anyone else here to tell you something you already know. One of the things I hear over and over from my friends who are still in the dark about jazz is that they are put off by the randomness and raucous nature of the music. Yet when I turn them on to recordings that are more deliberate and melodic, they respond favorably. My friend called me the other night after listening to "Sketches Of Spain" and was ecstatic. In fact he said, "It was great, I loved it. It's not like that squawking you have on in the background which is what most jazz sounds like to me." What he heard in the background was "JuJu." And I agreed with him. To my untrained ears, it sounds a little jarring and chaotic as well. Yes, this recording is considered a classic by many, but if you're looking for something a little more listenable, you might want to look elsewhere. Shorter's "Speak No Evil" works better for me, but still doesn't do it for me like, say, Coltrane's "Blue Train" or Adderley's "Somethin' Else." To be fair, I'll listen to this a few more times to see if I warm up to it.
Free Music Review: An indication of great things to come Hit: 3 Stars
more than a masterpiece itself. I find many of Shorter's solos a bit tenuous on this recording, but it is still very compelling music and better than the average. But do get the remastered version. Without exception, I have found all the RVG remasterings to be vastly superior to the originals on any mid- to high-level equipment. There is no lack of warmth and the sound is firmed up all around.
