On January 28,1985,many American musical figures gathered in a Los Angeles studio to give their love and support to those in Africa lacking food,clothing and education. This all-star ensemble called USA For Africa gave the music world one of the top hits of 1985. There was one flaw:Dan Aykroyd. He may be a USA resident,but he is Canadian by birth. Lionel Richie,who co-wrote WE ARE THE WORLD with Michael Jackson,delivers the opening line,"There comes a time when we heed a certain call". James Ingram joins ex-Commodore Richie in harmony for the next line. The next voices we hear are those of Stevie Wonder,Paul Simon,Kenny Rogers,Tina Turner,Billy Joel,Jackson,Diana Ross,Dionne Warwick,Willie Nelson,Al Jarreau,Bruce Springsteen,Kenny Loggins,Journey frontman Steve Perry,Daryl Hall,Huey Lewis,Cyndi Lauper,Kim Carnes,Bob Dylan and the late Ray Charles. Other participants,although they had no solo lines,include,Sheila Escovedo(commonly known as Sheila E.),Harry Belafonte,Aykroyd,Hall's partner John Oates and Bette Midler. The charity song was conducted by none other than Quincy Jones who has produced two of Jackson's albums amongst those of other artists. Yes,many have been obsessed with WATW throughout 1985,I have to admit. Following WATW are nine other tracks,respectively recorded by Perry,Springsteen,The Pointer Sisters(who were also part of the ensemble),Prince,Lewis and his band The News(theirs was previously released),Turner and Rogers. TEARS ARE NOT ENOUGH is a similar ode,recorded by a Canadian ensemble called Northern Lights,where Aykroyd belonged. Participants include many actors and singers such as Anne Murray,John Candy,Catherine O'Hara,Loverboy frontman Mike Reno and Bryan Adams. I bought this LP in 1985 when it came out. Although I still have it,I don't think I played it much since then.
