Free Music Review: They, Indeed, Get A Kick Out of Jazz!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great collection of timeless standards from the musical treasure chests of the most brilliant composers and lyricists of all-time, the likes of George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington, Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, Oscar Levant and Edward Heyman, Teddy Edwards, Tom Waits and James Taylor.

The wonderful songs were interpreted by some of the best contemporary artists in the music world today, recorded between 1991 thru 2004 and were taken from ten different albums. Each of the artists has shown their creativity and originality in their respective renditions and gave these evergreens new flair and fresh styles without losing their nostalgic touches.

My absolute favorite is James Taylor's splendid version of "The Nearness of You" (loved it!). This track was taken from Michael Brecker's album "The Nearness of You: The Ballad Book." He has the backing of seasoned jazzers: Michael Brecker on tenor sax, Pat Metheny on guitar, Herbie Hancock on piano, Charlie Haden on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. He sings it with so much warmth and affection. Through all these years, James Taylor has not lost the magic of his voice. It's still great and so heartwarming.

The opening track, "The Man I Love," from another talented singer/songwriter and a Grammy Awardee Joni Mitchell, is also one of the best, and so with Lizz Wright's great version of "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" featuring the exquisitely beautiful sax playing of David Sanborn.

Sting shines and shows off his vocal artistry with his awesome version of "It Aint Necessary So." Jamie Cullum's "I Get A Kick Out of You" is a joy to listen, and it also brings his piano skills to its best. Van Morrison's "How Long Has This Been Going On?" is also noteworthy as he gives this chestnut a new twist. The addition of Hammond B-3 organ played by Georgie Fame made it more listener-friendly.

Aaron Neville's "Blame It On My Youth" is one of the best tracks from this compilation and a group of equally talented musicians contributed their talents to make this song so charming: Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Rob Mounsey on piano, Anthony Wilson on guitar, Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums. The arrangement is simply grand.

The rest of the wonderful tracks are "Little Man," showcasing the vocal and guitar artistry of Tom Waits, "I Fall In Love Too Easily" by Linda Ronstadt and features the finest musicians such as Alan Broadbent on piano, Bob Mann on guitar, soloist Roy Hargrove on flugelhorn, Christian McBride on bass, Lewis Nash on drums, Jim Horn on tenor sax and Mike Haynes on flugelhorn. Diana Krall ends with a previously unreleased and a bonus track, "The Heart of Saturday Night."

I'm always on the lookout for great compilation CDs as interpreted by various artists to break the monotony, so to speak. This is one of the greatest compilation CDs I own. You'll enjoy listening to it not only for the variety of contemporary performers but also the repertoire of timeless standards. Greatly recommended.
