Free Music Review: This is Where I Switched the Channel

Depending on your point of view, this is either a stellar five-star release or a listenable but disappointing two-star release. Please read the entire review before you press that "not helpful" button.
For the typical person, this isn't a bad recording. In fact, it's a great recording. But...
I absolutely loved this band when I was a younger man, I had every single record they made, including this one. Heavy Weather was the last Weather Report release that I purchased. It isn't that the playing is bad, it's great! It isn't that the tunes are bad compositions, they're great! But this release was a major departure, the artistic sensibilities of Zawinul and Shorter evaporated with Black Market. Afterward they went from explorers to conquerers. I like explorers, especially musical explorers. The Mysterious Traveler that was Weather Report landed after Black Market. It was a soft landing. I'm thinking it is because Black Market must have been the pinnacle of what this band was originally about - the exploration of sound and rhthym. This release is about the use of formula - taking what you know works and crafting it into something very marketable.
So what? Heavy Weather seems to be more about the cash - and that's ok. Having cash is definitely a nice thing. These guys want nice things too. And why shouldn't they have them? They paid their dues. But it's still a little sad to me. It's as though Zawinul and Shorter abandoned the mission, abandoned the spirit of exploration for sure-fire hits. This was/is a popular release and made this band the superstar darlings of jazz - and rightly so. You might like Heavy Weather, but to my ears it was clear this band was headed in a direction that did not, and still does not interest me. I cringe everytime I hear Birdland (especially if it's done by the Manhattan Transfer). Give me Blackthorn Rose, Boogie Woogie Waltz, 125th Street Congress, Orange Lady, The Man in the Green Shirt and Nubian Sundance anyday over this polished, highly produced set of hits (you can dance to all of it)! If you like this release, please don't get mad...
How can I say this... To me, listening to Weather Report's earlier recordings is like a date with the love of my life and talking long into the night about the things you often wonder about: Is there life "out there?" Who invented bread? When the universe stops expanding and starts deflating will history run in reverse out of the past? But listening to Heavy Weather is like a date with a good looking, well-dressed, expensive call girl with whom I have absolutely nothing in common. We know why we are here and we can have a good time for a few moments but there really is nothing there, no mystery.
And now for today's weather report - "Starting today, everyday will be warm and sunny." ...So why even bother to tune in?
Postscript: Joe Zawinul's recent offerings are exponentially better than this release. Zawinul reclaimed his soul from the devil himself. One can hear he has returned to the status of explorer. His heart must not have really been in the world of pop-jazz. Vienna Nights... now THAT's more like it Joe. Awesome!
