Free Music Notes for Make Believe (Jewl)Free Music Review: Welcome to the Land Of "Make Believe" Hit: 5 Stars
Welcome to the land of Make Believe!!! Weezer's follow up to their 4th album "Maladroit" which most hardcore fans said wasn't great. In fact, Rivers' said himself the past 2
albums weren't acceptable. It seems that "Make Believe" finally has turned things around. After more than 200 scrapped songs were created... Weezer has chosen the final 12. (as well as B Sides which have no yet been released.)
Beverly Hills - 6/10 - Welcome to Make Believe. Some may feel this track doesn't belong on the album. In general, it doesn't sound like the rest of the album. This is a misleading song. Although, you can't deny it's catchy. USing the popular 1, 4, 5 progression. A talkbox solo throws in a bit of uniqueness into the song along with the "Gimmie Gimmie's". You also can't go wrong with 2 guitar solos. Then again, Rivers,
it may not be a good idea to rap about not belonging in Beverly Hills. Didn't you learn your lesson with "Mo Beats"?
Perfect Situation - 10/10 - As soon as the album goes to track 2 on your cd player, you will notice a difference. Perfect Situation is one of strongest songs on the album. The
chorus is filled with "Whoa's" of emotion while the verses are filled with Rivers Cuomo's fun poppy vocals with piano and guitar. We can't forget about the almighty catchy bridge
and impressive guitar solo that may remind the fans of some Pinkerton momories. Memories such as when Rivers sings the notes of what the guitar is playing. Truely a beautiful
song.
This Is Such a Pity - 10/10 - Weezer meets The Cure. That's really all that may come to mind when listening to TISAP. A groove similar to an 80's pop tune. This song includes
a very strong synth part. If it was 1986 this would have been number 1 on the billboard charts. Rivers Cuomo's voice sounds very crisp and clean in this song. Fantastic. Oh,
and how could I forget the killer guitar solo in this song. Harmonies to die for!
Hold Me - 9/10 - Back in 2003, 23 demos were released to the online Weezer community which all ended up being trashed. Later about 3 more followed, Hold Me was one of those 3. Rivers Cuomo experimented by doing an acoustic and electric version. This was the only demo to survive the trashing streak Rivers Cuomo went on after Maladroit. This version on Make Believe includes unforgettable vocals, both lead and backup. What's so neat is that Rivers combined both versions into one and added a guitar solo. All in all, this song is very deep and has an exploding and emotional chorus and vocal part.
Peace - 9/10 - Another powerful ballad. A lot of fans seem to enjoy this one. The acoustics in the verses sound beautiful and clean and then when the distortion kicks in, it's beautiful. Especially, that nice soft rock riff that the guitar does really adds a whole new meaning to the song. Also, the "whoa's" come back and sound just as good as
they did in "Perfect Situation" if not better. The guitar solo gives me goosebumps.
We're All On Drugs - 7.5/10 - It's about time a hard rock song came into the mix! The song starts off with lead guitar thats sounding like it's going to go into something big. Now,
this is a song I could see being fun at a live show. As you're waiting for the chorus, all of a sudden you hear Rivers shout "Give it to Me!" and into the chorus you go! After
all of the hard rock guitars, the "woos",the vocals and the "yeahs" you will be blown away and singing along. The short little bridge was a nice addition before the solo. If the song had better lyrics, maybe it would have been a higher rating. The lyrical worst is some of the worst on the album
The Damage In Your Heart - 8.5/10 - This song starts off with a soulful guitar solo. A truely deep piece off the album. It makes you feel the sorrow that Rivers Cuomo may be feeling in the lyrics. The harmonics add such a nice touch to the verses and choruses. The chorus is catchy and you will be singing along for sure. Such a soft song, yet sopowerful. Even though the guitar solo could have been better, it's not that big of a
deal and the one at the beginning made up for it. Overall, a superb song. Nice vocals.
Pardon Me - 9.5/10 - One of my personal favorites off of the album. Rick Rubin (producer)said this was his favorite as well. This song is clearly an apology from Rivers to his
fans, to his band members, and to anyone he has hurt. The vocal part and lyrics are deep and meaningful. One of the most powerful and strongest songs on the album if not the strongest. The song opens up with a distorted yet soft guitar riff. The verses and chorus are nothing but genius pop rock. The guitar solo is one of the best on the album. Truely, an amazing and very generic yet incredibly catchy song.
My Best Friend - 6/10 - My Best Friend is a pop rock song that may remind fans of the green album mixed with maladroit + NEW influences. Originally supposed to be used for
the "Shrek 2" soundtrack, this song includes an organ and loud distorted guitars. The main riff is quite catchy and really does stick in your head. The chorus vocals are the catchiest, "You're my best friend and I love you, and I love you". Possibly a little out of place, but none the less a nice song to go in the mix.
The Other Way - 8/10 - A nice guitar intro, and then kicks into vocals and acoustic guitar. Drums eventually come in, and then a chorus, "and so I turn and look the otherway". Almost sounds like a Rooney vocal melody but much better. The chorus is truely a strong point of the song. The vocals show some greatness, some of the best on the album. Also, we hear some hand claps which are suprisingly awesome mixed in with the song.
Freak Me Out - 7/10 - This is really the most unique song of the whole album. This sounds like something Weezer has NEVER done before. Very soft and eerie type song.
The synths and soft harmonics truely make it unique and beautiful. I can't say too much except give this song a shot. Hey, it has a harmonica solo in it... "City Streets at
night, till the morning light" It truely does feel like you are walking in the streets at night, alone. Then again, it sounds like Backstreet Boys mixed with Weezer, for being unique, it gets a 7.
Haunt You Everyday - 9/10 - Most likely the best album closer since "Only In Dreams" on"Weezer" (The Blue Album). This song starts off with piano and soft guitar with Rivers'
vocals. The chorus explodes and is very similar to the feeling "Only In Dreams" gives you. The best guitar solo on the album with so much emotion. The ending is the best
part, this I won't say much about except that it really is awesome and is like a mini "Only In Dreams" as said a million times before.
Overall: Good Job Weezer, you've made me proud, as well as your friends. My opinion is This album kicks Green album and Maladroit in the ass. Blue and Pinkerton may be better or equal to "Make Believe" depending on your tastes, but if you are a Weezer fan, you will most likely be pleased...(WzrColeman2)
Make Believe (Jewl) PosterWEEZER Make Believe (2005 US 12-track CD album produced by rock legend Rick Rubin and includes the singles Beverly Hills and We Are All On Drugs picture sleeve which has been fully AUTOGRAPHED by Rivers Cuomo Brian Bell Scott Shriner and Patrick Wilson across the front in silver marker pen) ** Complete With Certificate Of Authenticity ** Taking three-years between albums has made Weezer grow slower and more sober. But on its fifth disc the Los Angeles quartet is no more secure about its place in the world than it was a decade ago in longing tunes like "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here." Singer Rivers Cuomo, still struggling with adolescence at 34, is all apologies. "All I have to do is swing and I'm the hero/ But I'm a zero," he sings on "Perfect Situation," and "I am terrified of all things/ Frightened of the dark," on the lighters-aloft power ballad "Hold Me." The band, meanwhile, keeps things from getting too heavy by punctuating the songs with a familiar rush of bouncy new-wave melodies and fizzing power-pop riffs resulting in the hair-flinging metal of the future D.A.R.E. theme song and album high-point, "We Are All On Drugs." --Aidin Vaziri
