Free Music Notes for MaladroitFree Music Review: Weezer isnt the same - so what? Hit: 5 Stars
Whats up with all these people dissing on Weezer? i mean seriously, if this CD was released under another new band, people would love it 100 times more. But no. Just because it is under Weezer and isnt as good as their old stuff, people are putting it down. How can you be so selfish to ask them for another Blue Album or Pinkerton? Accept it or not, Weezer is not living that boring life of being a teenager or young adult hopelessly. They are now rockstars and they want to enjoy their lives. So their music isnt as deep as it could be but under human nature, why would they keep up that emo-ish sad music when their lives are really no longer as sad. That would be dishonest. I mean what would you do if you were a rockstar? If you get past the fact that Weezer is no longer their old selves and their music is not as deep, you can easily love this album. The guitar licks are more nu-metalish instead of the sloppy-garage-like licks in the old albums (which we all LOVE). If you have heard the first 2 albums enough you'll know what i mean (listen to the guitar lick in the beginning of "Across the Sea"). this album is really great just listen to the songs and pretend they are not from weezer and then judge it.I mean from the heavy pop-rockish "American Gigolo" to the end of the "December" you'll feel like you have gone through more than 33 minutes. There is the catchy "Keep Fishin", Pinkerton style "Slave", 60's style "Space Rock, and other tracks equally as good. I cant tell you which tracks are the best because they are mostly all equally as great. But this is perhaps the album's biggest problem to some people. Some people may be turned off by the fact that no song rises above the rest (although they are all really great). I personally disagree, because this is a simply a great thing Weezer has spoiled us with and people are still complaining about it. What if Weezer were to dumb down most of the songs and make only 3 of them really all that great? Wouldnt some of you haters be happy with it then? This is something what so many bands out there do, and many people dont complain about it. Overall, this album beats almost all music that exists these days. 95/100, rounds to 5 stars.
Free Music Review: Rocks your socks! Hit: 5 Stars
One year only after the release of their long-awaited third album (known as THE GREEN ALBUM), Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell and Patrick Wilson are back with a brand new opus entitled MALADROIT, and a brand new bass player (again): Scott Shriner. One of the particularities of this album, and no doubt a premiere for such a popular band, is that it was partly created with the help of the fans. Indeed, each day during the recording sessions of last December and January, Weezer's website weezer.com offered fresh mp3 deliveries of rough mixes of the work in progress, on which the fans were prompted to send their comments and ideas. What came out of this novel approach, aside from some quibbles with their record company that lead to the temporary closing of the weezer.com's audio/video page, is an album which I'm sure will reassure those who were a bit disappointed by the sometimes too straight-forward GREEN ALBUM. With its 13 tracks, MALADROIT is an explosive mix where the hard-rock riffs of AMERICAN GIGOLO, DOPE NOSE and FALL TOGETHER flirt with the funky beats of TAKE CONTROL and BURNDT JAMB or the punky ones of POSSIBILITIES, the emo mood of DEATH AND DESTRUCTION and SLOB or the poppy-sweet melodies of KEEP FISHIN', SPACE ROCK, SLAVE (my personal favourite), LOVE EXPLOSION and DECEMBER. Note that the UK edition has two bonus tracks: LIVING WITHOUT YOU, one that I would put with the punky ones, as well as a reissue of their international hit pop-single ISLAND IN THE SUN, for those who might have missed it. The enhanced part of the CD contains several on-the-road mini-movies, filmed by the fans' favourite webmaster and diarist, Weezer's fifth member Karl Koch. As a whole MALADROIT is a great, powerful rock record and Weezer have once again managed to surprise us with something unexpected. But even though the tracks are more elaborate and more subtle than those of THE GREEN ALBUM, in my opinion they still lack that special something, that little spark of magic that made THE BLUE ALBUM and PINKERTON such exceptional albums. So, while listening to MALADROIT, let's wait for their fifth, which they have already started recording and is scheduled for February 2003. YES! PS: Rivers Cuomo, would you marry me?
Free Music Review: Underrated to the extreme! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is a great album. It is highly underrated. Yes, maybe the songwriting isn't quite as quirky and awesome as The Blue Album or Pinkerton, but this is still a great album! It gets lots of playing by my MP3 player (I got the CD and put it on my MP3 player). The best part about it is the guitar. It is probably the best guitar and drums work they have done yet in their career. I'll go into reviewing each song now:
REVISION: I am changing a lot of my Weezer reviews because I was really annoyingly positive on everything back in my Weezer craze. These reviews are now being done after I have given the albums years to sink in rather than months. This one still gets 5 stars, though, I really like it.
American Gigolo: 10/10- Great way to start out the album! Sets the tone wonderfully!
Dope Nose: 10/10- Holy cow! I listen to this song over and over, yet I never get tired of it! The guitar, drums, and solo are great, but it is short.
Keep Fishin': 10/10- Another great song! This one has some good songwriting and is somewhat Beatles-reminiscant.
Take Control: 10/10- I love this song now! I didn't like it before, but now I'm addicted.
Death and Destruction: 7/10- Gets old fast. The one filler song on here.
Slob: 9/10 - Very good song, I really like the distorted intro.
Burndt Jamb: 10/10- Good guitar and has some pretty good songwriting once again.
Space Rock: 4/10 - Sort of worthless, filler, short song. This should have been jettisoned from the album altogether.
Slave: 9/10- This song is different, but is somewhat like Slob.
Fall Together: 10/10- Short, sweet and to the point. Good guitar once again.
Possibilities: 8/10- Another good and short one.
Love Explosion: 10/10- This is one that's a bit longer than the ones before it and a little bit better as well.
December: 10/10- A great song to end the album with. Couldn't have fit anywhere else.
OVERALL: 98%, A. This is almost as good as it gets. I like Blue a tad better and *sigh* yes, it is tied in my book with Pinkerton.
Free Music Review: Dig the weeze. Hit: 5 Stars
This album is ridculously good, and I'll tell you why. We'll have to go through =w= history first, however.1. Blue Album - neurotic, catchy, poppy, and rocking all at the same time. A perfect album. But it was a tone that couldn't last for the longterm. It was too young to last. 2. Pinkerton - Harsh. Frighteningly personal. Painful, almost. Definitely not radio-friendly. But it was AMAZING. Hell, I trained myself to sing high notes using this album. All true =w= fans came from this album. After Pinkerton, =w= took a five year hiatus, and while most fan bases would wither, =w='s only grew...hugely. Pinkerton creeped past gold record sales, and it was burned and shared to the millions. It became a cult phenonemon. Then... 3. The Green Album - Simple. Poppy. Rockin'. Catchy. Everything that =w= supposedly lost with Pinkerton was back, but the lyrics suffered. It was The Beatles turned power-punk (personally, I loved it, but others didn't). Still, it sold over a million, giving =w= more power in the studio. Cue Maladroit. It's catchy. It's poppy. But =w= has finally found what has eluded them for years. They are finally a rock n' roll band. Not rock. Not alternative. Not punk. Not post-grunge. ROCK 'N ROLL. The hooks remind me of the glory days of rock. It's not about the lyrics, which are great in Maladroit, or the music, which is even better. It's about strapping on some guitars, tightening up those skins, and banging out rock riffs and beats. Keep Fishin', the best song on the album, is full of some "ooohs" to give oldschool =w= fans chills of nostalgia, but it, just like the whole album, just somehow ROCKS at the same time. Here's the key: power-rock riffs combined with melodic, weezeresque choruses. It's the perfect combo. They still are as genuine as geeks. But now they're geeks that frickin' ROCK. They finally figured out what rock n' roll is all about. Now they're on a mission to save it. If you like rock at all, buy this album, quickly. =w= is here to save rock 'n roll.
Free Music Review: They are the best, aren't they? Hit: 5 Stars
This is neither a blue album, nor a pinkerton, nor a green album. Weezer has taken some of the best things in all of them and mixed them up, creating a superb record.Maladroit joins the catchy pop melodies that made The green so famous with a great musical base; this shows for real how good fans these guys are and how much music they listen to. Some of the tunes in this album remind me (let me dare to say this) of Green Day, Pixies (of course), but also Radiohead, and why not, Slipknot and 80's heavy metal. Guitar riffs are terrific (riffs were something that Green lacked) and the drummer does a fabulous job. Also, the bass sounds much better than in the previous album. This is something I have been thinking of: if they have been able to release this magnificent Maladroit, why did they release the Green Album? Well, I think that they did that brief record in order to show the world that they were just able to do whatever they wanted to. I think that Green is an ironic pop album, deeper than what is thought to be, because it represents a concept of essential music. On the other hand, Maladroit focuses on elaborate music (it has also the perfect melodies of the Green Album) and makes Weezer sound with a unique style. This style is surprisingly never the same, record to record, but when you hear it, you know who they are. This Maladroit is not Pinkerton, as The Green was not The Blue (as many people have said: in my opinion, the blue album is a wonderful melancholical bunch of masterpieces. The Green DOES NOT sound like the first ). There are a few conventional "made-to-be-single" songs, (Dope Nose), some are strong guitar pop (Keep fishin: impressive Pat), some have the wierdy style that we want in a Weezer song (Slob, Burndt Jamb), some are just bombs (Slave, Take control). Perhaps, the 13 songs are made-to-be-single strong guitar weird music bombs. (Okay, Okay, what is "Death and destruction"?) No prejudices. Forget (if you can) Blue, Pink, Green. This is new, it' differente enough, and it's amazing. Great musicians, best songs.
