Free Music Notes for MaladroitFree Music Review: great album with a lot of crossover appeal Hit: 5 Stars
Weezer sounded like a new Beach Boys with the first, slef-titled "Blue Album." They made a big mistake to some fans, however, with the metalish and thrashy approach on the second album, "Pinkerton." With the cold reception, they rode out the '90's on hiatus, snoozed through the alternative market crash, and woke up on top of the world by releasing another self-titled album, dubbed "The Green Album." Now, with Maladroit, they make a great effort, and a successful one, to make a crossover appeal. "Maladroit" ventures into territory that older fans will love with some Beach Boys sounding tracks, and also will reach metalheads with the other tracks. The lead single, "Dope Nose", is kind of like the songs on Pinkerton. "Keep Fishin'" and "Love Explosion", the 12th and best track, explore territory that Weezer covered on the previous albums, and they both are outstanding and successful efforts. The rest of the album is also great, but the three tracks mentioned above are the best. The album itself will please both fans of Pink or Black Sabbath. That statement alone should prove that this is a disc of appeal to almost anyone, so buy this today. Weezer is one of the few good power-pop acts to ever come out, and I'm very sure that you will find them an appealing act.
Free Music Review: Best Weezer record since the Blue album. Hit: 5 Stars
Weezer has come a long way since the Blue album and Maladroit is just a taste of things to come. After Pinkerton came out in 1996 and failed to catch a spark Weezer released the green album in 2001 which was basically the opposite of the desperately sad and emotional Pinkerton. Meant to show that Weezer could still make joyful music to be appreciated on a broader scale. After being out of the loop for a good four years, the Green album was like a cheerful cry from lead vocalist Rivers Coumo who had been depressed during the time when Pinkerton was made. But the effort for the Green album seemed to many people and even Coumo himself, to be uninspired and bland. It was a great record but it didn't have the same life as Blue and Pinkerton did. After being available entirely in mp3 format on the internet for the months preceding it's release, Maladroit finally hit's store shelves around the U.S on May, 14th 2002. In speedy fashion the CD came out only about a year after the Green album. The album is a major turning point for Weezer, and the for their new bassist Scott Shriner. The sound of this album is much harder then any earlier Weezer records. Most of the tracks are driven by hard, uncompromising arena rock metal riffs and crisp drum beats. It's a must buy for fans of Weezer and fans of good Rock n Roll music.
Free Music Review: Maladroit No. 087615 Hit: 5 Stars
Following up 2001's self-titled "Green Album," Weezer waste no time and produce a better, more complete album less than a year later. Maladroit has it's own distinct sound, as is the case with each individual Weezer album. The Blue Album had it's ultra-nerd appeal, Pinkerton was the moodier, more emotional album and Green Album was feel-good pop-punk in short doses. Maladroit manages to steer itself away from all of the styles on those albums and creates a whole new Weezer style, with a sound more likely influenced by Van Halen than by The Pixies. Hard-rocking anthems like "Dope Nose" and "American Gigolo" are complemented nicely by more melodic tracks, like my personal favorite "Death and Destruction." Once again, Rivers proves himself to be the self-proclaimed song machine he is, effortlessly churning out 13 perfect, hook filled tracks, each of which could be the next hit single. His lyrics on Maladroit resemble the writing style on Pinkerton, which is emotional, but making sure not to take himself too seriously. It's amazing how great this album is, considering it was put together in less than a year. In a music world where some bands wait 5 years to put out an album that's subpar, it's really inspiring to hear a band like Weezer to put out extreme quality in album after album. Other bands could take a lesson from the W.
Free Music Review: Oh thank the lord Hit: 5 Stars
Oh man, i am so happy with this. After the radio-friendly release of the green album i was a little concerned for the fate of weezer. They had gone from thrusting jams to poppy pretty songs about children and smiles. Now it's not that i disliked the green album, it just didn't follow the expectations lent by the blue album and pinkerton. Good solid albums. But with the pending release of maladroit there was fear in my veins. What would happen would there be nice songs about kittens with some good tracks and some weak moments, or was i looking at a good solid rock and roll album. This is rock and roll in the tradition of the greats. American Gigolo has the forward drive of a seventies muscle car, and Possibilities has the speed and sing-alonginess of the Ramones. Overall, this album hails some of the heavy distortion and pounding licks that are just simply ROCK. So here is what will save us from the creeds and bizkits of rock. Fill the airwaves with jams like slob so i can nod my head in rockin agreement and be proud of music again. Thankyou, weezer. Now i can say your name with assured pride again, and not quietly mumble your name among my favorite bands. For what it's worth, here's my five stars hoping we will hear more bands following this lead and dismissing rap-rock into the pages of history. =w=
Free Music Review: Weezer's best (says this long time fan anyway!) Hit: 5 Stars
Of course, everyone was stunned when the Blue album came out. Wow, here were some guys from California redefining rock and grunge. No longer was it depressing, it was lively, and had the same atmosphere as that developed by the Beach Boys and other 'happy' bands. Then came Pinkerton, which was impressive in some ways, but not quite up to par. Five years after that came Green and we were a bit disappointed. There were a few good songs, but it sounded as if Weezer had 'sold out'. And now comes Maladroit.. Maladroit is not a return to the days of the Blue album, but it is the only other Weezer album that sounds somewhat similar to it. Musically, the songs are all as good as those on Blue, and in some cases are even better (American Gigolo, Keep Fishin, Drop Nose, Slave, Burndt Jamb). Lyrically, this album is very [pooe] and probably deserves one star. As someone who doesn't give two hoots about lyrics, this is ideal for me, but I can see why other fans are peeved. Maladroit does not have the happy-go-lucky lyrics of Blue, but the music is far better, and that's all that counts with me. Either way, this album doesn't deserve a bad rating, because even if you don't like it, it has to beat the unoriginal dirge released by Puddle of Mudd, Limp Bizkit, and other such bands. This is true power-pop/rock at its best.
