Free Music Notes for Bad Hair DayFree Music Review: Bad Hair Day will give you a Good Funnybone Day Hit: 5 Stars
The continuing second wind streak of Weird Al Yankovic continues with Bad Hair Day, and you'll have a good funny bone day listening to this album."Amish Paradise" is a send-up of Coolio's "Gangsta Paradise" and the lyrics are on Amish life and attitudes of hard work, devotion to the Bible, pacifism, churning butter, and selling quilts to a humorous twist: "But if I finish all of my chores and you finish thine/then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699." And on a boy who kicks him in the rear, he says "I just smiled at him and turned the other cheek/I really don't care, in fact I wish him well/'cause I'll be laughing my head off, when he's burning in hell." My head came off after that line. A great opener for the album. "Everything You Know Is Wrong" is a crazy nonsense tune on weird happenings and dreams, such as being abducted into another dimension by Jamie Farr-like aliens. "Black is white, up is down, and short is long/and everything you thought was just so important doesn't matter." Very Marx Brothers chaotic. No, "Cavity Song" is not about those airport searches by customs inspectors or cops. This parody of U2's "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me". It's Al's observations at a dentists, with the outdated magazines, and dental treatment. However, the piercing sound of the dental drill is a bit disconcerting, send-up or not. And why not use "Numb me, drill me, floss me, bill me" for a title instead of "Cavity Search?" Oh well. "Callin' In Sick" is a Nirvana-type song, kind of like "Lithium", and on the different things we can do by calling in sick and having that needed day off. "I could sit all day in my underwear watching 'Ernest Goes To Camp'/I could sit and count my hair/I could burp my Tupperware" Yeah, really useful. "The Alternative Polka" shows that Al is still up on the music shift that took place in the mid-90's, when alternative became the new style. Song medley list: Beck's "Loser", Stone Temple Pilots' "Sex Type Thing", Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do", Nine Inch Nails' "Closer", R.E.M.'s "Bang And Blame", Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know", Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet On Butterfly Wings", Red Hot Chili Peppers' "My Friends", Foo Fighter's "I'll Stick Around", Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun", and Green Day's "Basket Case." "Since You've Been Gone" is a doowop song describing how one feels when a loved one's gone, "It's like I've got a great big mouthful of cod liver oil" or "an ice cream headache that won't go away." And there is a punchline to this song. "Lump" by the Presidents of the United States of America is turned into "Gump", about that guy and his boxful of chocolates, you know that guy who "told JFK he had to p--" and who "went to the White House and showed LBJ his b-tt." "I'm So Sick Of You" is a list of irritating things that really get on one's nerves. The girl here is someone with no class, manners, hygiene, someone so low on the food chain. Someone who snores when they're wide awake, bites their toenails, and uses a guy's razor to shave their back hair? Al, quick, DUMP HER NOW! The TV junkie song "Syndicated Inc." based on Soul Asylum's "Misery" shows Al hasn't lost his TV songs touch. "I Remember Larry" is a song about the title character, someone who did all sorts of bad stuff to Al, like putting Ben Gay in his jockstrap, giving him Ex-lax brownies, dumped toxic waste on his lawn. Well, Al gets even with him in a cruel but well-deserved way-in fact that's what I'd do--if I was in a nice mood. "Don't go makin' phony calls/please stick to the seven-digit numbers you're used to" go the chorus of "Phony Calls", based on TLC's "Waterfalls" on a prank phone caller. He uses a clip from the Simpsons, where Bart asks for "Mike Rotch." and the bartender asks for... "Like a big fat drunk disgruntled Yuletide Rambo/And he smiled as he said with a twinkle in his eye, 'Merry Christmas to all..now you're all gonna die!" "The Night Santa Went Crazy" is a Soul Asylum-type ballad about Santa having snapped, going postal and taking it out on the reindeer: "And he ground up poor Rudolph into reindeer sausage/He got Dancer and Prancer with an old German Luger/and he slashed up Dasher just like Freddie Krueger." The funniest Christmas song since "Christmas At Ground Zero." Probably my third favourite Weird Al album, after Dare To Be Stupid and Off The Deep End.
Free Music Review: Great! Hit: 5 Stars
One of, if not Weird Al's best album, 'Bad Hair Day' was in a way the culmination of the 'classic Al' period, that is the last album he made with moustache and spectacles. It's one of his best indeed, and nearly every track is a gem - the parodies are all hilarious and creative, and even some of the original tunes will make you crack a smile. On 'Bad Hair Day' Al's production values are as high as they've ever been, his band is tight and efficient, and be it rap (Coolio), rock (U2) or R&B (TLC) his arrangements and imitations are spot on every time. Al proves beyond a doubt that he's as well tapped into the contemporary changes in music as ever before, and he can goof up rap as well as he goofed up grunge five years before.
'Amish Paradise' is probably the album's biggest draw; not only is it a perfect parody of Coolio's style and a fantastic concept song with some hilarious lyrics ('Think you're really righteous?/Think you're pure at heart?/Well, I know I'm a million times as humble as thou art!'), it's also accompanied by one of Al's most brilliant and finely produced videos and also supplied inspiration for the fantastic cover photo. 'Cavity Search' is also a fantastic parody on U2's hard rocker 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me', and Al delivers his Bono imitation perfectly. Only slightly lower on the laugh-o-meter are 'Phony Calls', a parody of TLC's 'Waterfalls' (it's a shame a video wasn't made for this one because TLC's classic video just begs to be parodied) and 'Gump', a parody which blends Forrest Gump with 'Lump', a great little rocker by Presidents of the USA - which, unfortunately, didn't stand the test of time as well as the aforementioned film did, so neither song nor video are quite as funny as they might have been unless you remember that band. 'Syndicated Inc.', based on Soul Asylum's 'Misery' is probably the weakest track on the album, but it gets its share of laughs.
'Everything You Know is Wrong' (loosely based on the styling of They Might Be Giants), 'Callin' In Sick' (which sounds like any nonspecific grunge band), 'I Remember Larry' and 'I'm So Sick of You' are all as good as the best of Al's original songs. Worthy of special notice are 'Since You've Been Gone', a doo-wop song with a nifty punchline that is just short enough to be a great little song; and 'The Night Santa Went Crazy', probably a follow-up to the classic 'Christmas at Ground Zero', in which Al settles some scores with Chris Cringle and it really is laugh-out-loud funny. My underdog favorite for the album though is, as always, the polka medley - 'The Alternative Polka' is one of the best of these pieces and in it Al takes the latest and coolest in alternative rock anthems and derives them of all coolness - among these are Beck's 'Loser', Alanis Morisette's 'You Oughtta Know', Nine Inch Nails' 'Closer', Smashing Pumpkins' 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings', Green Day's 'Basket Case' and Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun'. Bear in mind that in 1996 this was not only popular but also the most cutting-edge and critic-friendly music around and by ridiculing it Al kicks it roughly off its pedestal. Again, Al shows just how much he's tapped into modern music and also just how much pretentiousness and bulls**t there is even in the best of it.
'Bad Hair Day' is one of Weird Al's best albums; if you're looking for a good laugh and don't mind a few jokes at the expense of good music, it's well worth it. If you're a Coolio fan and you stumbled into it through 'Amish Paradise', it's also worth the purchase.
Free Music Review: BAD Hair Day? This CD is AWESOME!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is a must-have for any Weird Al collector or comedy collector. Though the latter part is a little better, it is all great. 1. Amish Paradise: A classic. A wicked funny song with a very funny plot. However, this song could've never existed if he had gotten the real word that Coolio didn't want him to do a parody of Gangsta's Paradise. 2. Everything You Know Is Wrong: Funny, but overrated. The lyrics are great and everything, but overrated. 3. Cavity Search: Very funny parody of U2's song. People can relate to this song, too. 4. Callin' In Sick: I could live without it, but it isn't all that bad. 5. The Alternative Polka: One of his best polkas, in my opinion. The music in the background is similar to the one in Running With Scissors. 6. Since You've Been Gone: Though there are no instruments, this song is very funny, making fun of early doo-wop music, and a surprise ending. 7. Gump: Hilarious! The lyrics all flow together awesome, and it describes Forrest Gump very well. 8. I'm So Sick Of You: Very funny. The lyrics are sheer genius. Like Cavity Search, people can relate to it (men, anyway). 9. Syndicated Inc.: Okay. It's way better than the original song. 10. I Remember Larry: I cracked up the very first time I heard this. Since my neighbors are terrible too, it was like a glance back at 2002 (ha ha!). 11. Phony Calls: One of the best songs on the CD, no, in the comedy business, no, THE WORLD! This song is so friggin' awesome, and he busted on TLC! And the bit from The Simpsons in the middle is great 12. The Night Santa Went Crazy: Probably the best song. It's one of those songs that you can see happening, and after listening to it a few times, you know all the lyrics (not including reading them in the booklet). Get this CD now. I'm not asking you or suggesting it, I'm telling you. BUY THIS CD NOW!!!
Free Music Review: Wierd Al's Best! Hit: 5 Stars
Bad Hair Day is definetely "Wierd Al" Yankovic's best work to date. It has 12 more hilarious tracks that will kill you with laughter. I will rate them and give my comments.1. Amish Paradise=***** A parody of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" about an old Amish family. Very funny video too. 2. Everything You Know Is Wrong= ***** A sidesplitting original tune about some pretty random subject matter. The best song on the album. 3. Cavity Search= ***** A parody of U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" about one big dental problem. 4. Callin' In Sick= **** An original tune about a man who hates his boss and fakes sick so he can stay home from work. 5. The Alternative Polka= ****1/2 His third best polka medley, only beaten by "The Hot Rocks Polka" and "The Angry White Boy Polka." Features tunes by the Nine Inch Nails, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Beck (among others). 6. Since You've Been Gone= ***** A doo-wop ballad in the style of a barbershop quartet. Al sings lead and his band sings backup in three parts (tenor, baritone, and bass). 7. Gump=**** A parody of The Presidents Of The United States song "Lump" about Forrest Gump. 8. I'm So Sick Of You= ***** Definetely not to be sung to your girlfriend. 9. Syndicated Inc.= ****1/2 A parody of Soul Asylum's "Misery" about syndicated TV shows. 10. Free Music Review: A must buy for anyone who isn't deaf Hit: 5 Stars
Amish Paradise was the first song after a three year "Weird Al" drought and it was worth the wait. It is about living in an Amish community and is a parody of the one hit wonder Coolio's Gangster's Paradise. Other great parodies are Cavity Search (parody of Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me) which sounds pretty similar to U2. This song does have a dental drill solo which some people find squeamish. Gump (parody of Lump) is a sensational song about the movie of the same name. Syndicated Inc. (parody of Misery) is about the syndicated American television shows. The final parody is Phony Calls (parody of Waterfalls). I never liked the TLC original song so this didn't do much for me. Simpson fans will find a classic prank call by Bart to Moe in this song. The original songs on this album are what make it a classic "Weird Al" album though. Callin' in Sick is about avoiding work. Since You've Been Gone is funny song about a guy singing about his girl who has left. I'm So Sick of You is another great song where Al tells life like it actually is. Those of you sick of soppy love songs will love this one. I Remember Larry is about a neighbourhood bully. Everything You Know Is Wrong is the least good of the originals. One of the most famous and popular songs ever written is also the final track on this album. That song is the Night Santa Went Crazy about Santa working out he is getting gypped and taking vengeance. You will pull it out every Christmas for the family to sing along to. This album also has really good photo artwork of Al. It is a must buy for anyone, even if your not a "Weird Al" fan.
